A close friend of mine was working on getting a full corset piercing. As you might know, corsets are done vertically along the lower back, but are still similar in the sense that they are surface piercings. She only got one row accomplished (two piercings) before it surfaced. I would say that it took only around a month or so before she completely lost the piercings. Now she has two lovely little scars on her lower back.
Getting a horizontal back piercing, you'd have even LESS skin to work with than my friend did, so I'm willing to bet it would surface even faster. They're called "surface piercings" for a reason; your back is not a place that enjoys being pierced.
I'm all for piercings; I have ten of them myself (all of which have lasted me between 1 year and 13 years), but you'll end up shelling out probably around $80 for something that won't even last you but a couple of months, tops. To me, that's just not worth it, and neither is the scar. If you're into scarification, however, you might think differently. If it were my choice though, I'd say don't do it.

I have a surface piercing that didn't reject, but its on my face. I think it all has to do with luck. Surface bars, although many swear by them, are not the best for every area of the body...but it probably would be appropriate for a large area such as the lower back>Approproate jewelery should be discussed with your piercer.
Although rejection can't always be avoided, the following things can help prevent it-
-Don't touch it with unwashed hands, don't sleep on it, don't get it caught on your friends, or anything else, try to avoid wearing tight clothing that will rub up against it, and basically try to avoid any roughplay that can tear the skin around the piercing. Salt water soaks are also a good idea.
But remember that even if you take the best care of it in the world, theres still a large chance it will reject. But good luck!

Surface piercings are just for show b/c they are very close to the top layer of skin. Your body will eventually push the bar out/ reject it. Getting these types of body modications is also quiet painful

Surface piercings arent meant for long term because they're so close to the skin surface, the skin will eventually reject the jewelry.

neat piercing idea. as for the rejecting part, it really depends on your skin, and the pierced, and what you kind of jewelry you keep in.

its really just a gamble with surface piercings.
