You don't need a passport YET - but this will change shortly (the date is CURRENTLY January 1, 2008)

I'm not 100% sure, but to cross into the US from Canada, you need a valid Driver's License and a Birth Certificate (I don't know what you use if you're under 16 though)

It should be the same crossing into Canada though...

after January 2008 you will need a passport to cross the Canadian border but as for now a picture i.d. and birth certificate should do.

Our family just came back from Canada. You dont need anything to get into Canada, they just ask you if you have any Alcohol or drugs and how much. But to get back into the U.S.A you need a picture I.D. for everyone who is riding in the car, your original birth certificit, and your Social Security number. That is what we used.

You need your SSN and your driver's license. Also you need to show them that you have applied for a passport. Since they are having so many problems with getting the passports on time to people who have applied, they got a new rule out, that you don't need your passport, but you have to show your application.
