In my opinion, the answer is no. Keep in mind that the Japanese were trained to fight to the death and never surrender. Simple logic says that because of this, nothing that doesn't harm them won't affect them. We also see that it took two bombs to get them to surrender, and at this time, the U.S. only had two bombs made, with the next one in production that would be ready perhaps a month from then. So, using one bomb in the water leaves only one bomb left to actually inflict harm on the Japanese population. This, as we have seen, would not have been enough, as it took two bombs to bring them to their senses.

There's no telling. The Japanese were pretty committed to defending themselves to the last man, and though it would have sent the message "We have a terrible weapon at our disposal" it would also have sent the message "We don't have the guts to actually use it on you." It could also have been interpreted by the Japanese as a trick of some kind - if it really was a bomb that could be dropped on our cities, and, not, say, several old ships loaded with explosives, why didn't they drop it on a city?

So a big splash in the water and thousands of dead fish would have scared the Japanese??
The radiation fall out would still have had the potential to drift inland and cause problems as well.
The Japanese Military high command was given every chance to surrender, because they refused the Japanese population had to suffer.
But lets not forget the populations of China, Korea, Philippines, New Guinea, Burma, Indochina as well as the thousands of soldiers from Australia, New Zealand, India, Nepal, etc.. etc.. who had to endure death and torture, rape, starvation and slave labour under the Japanese.

No ! They didn't surrender after the first bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, either. It took a second bomb on Nagasaki, to convince the Japanese that we meant business !

No, and even after the first bomb, they still refused to stop fighting so, it took the second bomb to wake them up.
The US has gotten a bad rap for this, but the millions of lives, Allies and Japanese, that would have been lost in an invasion, would not have been a terrible price to pay.

No. They didn't surrender after the first nuke, what makes you think that they would've surrendered after a "warning" shot. Either way, the US shouldn't have surrendered.

Please read your history.. we dropped one bomb on them.. and they still didn't surrender.. we had to drop another.. so why on earth would they have surrendered if we had dropped it in the Pacific Ocean- you don't declare war on a country unless you are willing to fight it... they attacked us and declared war on us... so.... the rest is history

Probably not as decisively. I think Truman understood that we had to demonstrate some substantive loss of human life in order to make them surrender. -RKO- 06/22/07

we will never know...two points...one-the final blockage to surrender was insistence by the emperor that he not be disgraced in agreeing to "unconditional surrender". ...two-in consultations with Truman, it was determined that a willingness to unleash the "bomb" on civilians must be displayed to the Soviets, prior to the close of hostilities.
