I just got home from shopping for a couple hours. I let my dogs out, turned around, and there's my cat with a swollen face! I had seen him a few hours ago and he was fine. It's so weird. It's like his cheeks are swollen. Cheekbones, do cats have those? Dunno. It just makes him look funny. I tried touching his face, it doesn't bother him in the slightest. And it doesn't feel weird, either. He acts perfectly normal. He's got a very unique personality and that hasn't changed. No other symptoms to account for! It bothers me, but I'm not too upset because he seems fine, except he looks like that.

I am thinking an allergic reaction? I don't know. has this happened to anyone before because I'm at a loss at what is the deal. I'd take him to the vet, but I live in a smaller area and nothing is open for miles. not to mention, it's friday.

yeah, im thinking its an insect bite. the swelling hasnt gotten any worse. he is eating, playing in catnip...he's got very short hair, and i cant tell if hes been bitten. he hasnt been outside. i dont let him out. so i dont think its a snake or raccoon ;) i just think he was messing with a spider or something down in our basement and got a little bit of justice. haha.

oh and alley -- consider yourself reported to yahoo. :)

to randall -- i think it is. i'm from northern minnesota. and as i said, i havent let him outside for months. he doesnt have his shots right now. i googled "cat swollen face" and came up with angioedema. which is swelling of the face. it is an allergic reaction -- but its said that it really causes respiratory issues.

mary c---its like right under his eyes down to his jaw. i looked in his mouth and i cant see anything. then again, he really doesn't let me. i will make some phone calls tomorrow to try to find an emergency hospital, if he gets any worse. but at the moment.....he's doing perfectly fine. i'll keep an eye and i'll be sure to post what happens, if anything.

no, my dogs aren't like that. and they play with him, toad tolerates it. and this has never happened, even when my dog - scout - holds him down and licks his face and ears. no swelling. i think this has happened in the past three hours -- and during that time, my dogs are in the kennel because we're not home!!

Sounds like an allergic reaction to me, too. Sometimes cats try to eat spiders, bees, and other insects. Another possibility is an abscess or an infected tooth, but I wouldn't expect those to cause both cheeks to swell.

Keep an eye on him in case the swelling progresses and he starts having trouble breathing. If he does, it's time for the vet, of course.

Cat Swollen Face

2016-11-13 20:48:21 · answer #3 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Is it his cheeks that are swollen, and not the lymph nodes at the base and back of his mandible (his lower jaw bone)?

If it is his lymph nodes, you really will need to get him to a vet, as that can be something bad.

If it really is his cheeks (yes, cats have a maxilla and sinuses), you need to make some phone calls tomorrow. If you can get a hold of a vet in a nearby larger area, and just ask him, that would be a good idea, unless a vet or vet tech responds to you here. Cats can have allergic reactions, and I maybe shouldn't be responding to you, because I have no experience with it. But swelling of the face can become dangerous if it extends internally and involves the throat, for instance. And what I just do not know is whether the old tried and true human remedies, like Benadryl, which is a wonderful old antihistamine, will work for a cat.

Normally, swelling of the cheek in a cat means a tooth is abscessing, but they definitely experience pain with that, and the swelling is not bilateral, but just on one side.

If you don't hear back from someone who is not a dum-dum like me about this, but who really has some expertise, do try to hook up with someone on line or on the phone before Monday, provided this hasn't started to deflate.

I wish I could be more help, and I'm so sorry I can't.

It could be an allergic reaction to anything/like a bee sting. But more likely to be an abscess of some sort. Could be a cat fight bite wound under the fur, could be an abscessed tooth. Apply a warm compress ( take a wash cloth and soak in hot water for a minute and squeeze excess water out, place it on the inside of your wrist, it needs to be very hot, but not to hot, so if you can stand it, you won't burn your cat) to your cats face hold it there for 5 minutes or until you cat doesn't want it anymore. Do this 3 times a day. If you notice and draining get your pet to the vet, it will need antibiotic. A very few cats will have something like swelling that turns out to be cancer, but any of the three things I mentioned are serious enough to get your pet to the vet! Good luck.

Face Swollen On One Side

2016-12-29 16:51:31 · answer #6 · answered by Anonymous · 0 1

It happened to my mother in law's cat, but it was only on one side of the face. It was an infection that eventually ruptured and healed on it's own. If it was an allergy there should be respiratory symptoms. It could be a bite from a bug or some kind of small animal- I don't know where you're from- but if he seems to be okay don't worry about it. Check it's teeth to make sure it's not an abscess.

He could of been bitten by something and you really can't tell when that happens. My cats top of his head and cheek were swollen. He seemed fine at first then the next day I had to take him in. Apparently he got bit by a raccoon.... it got infected and he had a really bad fever. I could not see the bite but when they shaved his head.... it was there and horrible. They cleaned it right away and he was on antibiotic's for 4 days.... and I had to keep the wound clean one a day.... but then he was fine.... I would go right away... you will end up spending less money if they can clean it before it gets infected. Bites from animals cause puncture wounds and those don't drain that well.... that is why they get infected..... Please go.... hope that helps.... :)

Appears to be an allergic reaction. Keep an extra eye on your cat for any breathing trouble.
If the swelling does not significantly decrease within 24 hours have your cat seen by a vet.
