The pure bliss of rational thought. A meeting of the minds, a well-turned phrase, a good deed not motivated by self-interest, acceptance of death, intellectual honesty.

To me, peace and ecstasy are two different things. I get peace from acceptance of myself and who I am. Ecstasy is a state of emotion so intense that one is carried beyond rational thought and self-control. The only times I get like that is in the bedroom!

The red Thai curry I made for dinner tonight!
Seriously, I do find an almost ecstatic state when I am out in nature birding and I see a bird that I wasnt expecting to see. I sometimes feel so connected to the world. I get the same feeling when I am out in the country on a moonless night and see just how vast space is. I love this world. I have no need of another.

Taking the time to help someone in need. Visiting a lonely, elderly person in a nursing home.
Atheists don't sit home and pray to an invisible man in the sky to solve the worlds problems. They go out and actually make a difference.
Atheists say let's not build a church, lets build a hospital instead.

IMHO, my sense of peace comes from being happy with myself - who I am, who I may become, who I used to be.
I think that a person of faith's idea of ecstasy and mine would be vastly different, however. Not necessarily sexual, either.

Personal security comes to mind, lack of guilt comes to mind, self assurance comes to mind... all, when thinking about peace.
I don't know about the ecstasy thing... That's either a bit goofy or an overstatement of just being appropriately happy by one's self or in a group. "Ecstasy"...?... Come on... that's a tad overboard in most instances, isn't it?

methyl amphetamines???
seriously, how about the knowledge that I can live my life without an invisible man in the sky that gives out laws and decided that he doesn't need to follow them, or a dead guy, or a book full of contradictions, or some alter boy abusing priest telling me what is 'right'...

Swimming in a pure drinking-water lake at midnight, naked and on LSD.
Riding home down the empty highway at 5am, having dropped off my new, spectacular girlfriend at her home - so her parents could pretend to themselves that we hadn't been in my bed for the previous 12 hours.

Not having to listen to professors of delusion.....being in nature without having to hear the sound of human voices....knowing that I'm free to live my own beliefs other than what organized religion attempts to draw me into in the interest of bringing money to their church....
