Hi- I am not a doctor, but I was an ER nurse for many years, and so these things are what your question makes me think of. Under your right rib cage are your liver, your gall bladder, your pancreas, the top of your right kidney, and a loop of your large intestine. So, it could come from a lot of different things.
You didn't say how old you are, or if you are having any other symptoms, which would help you know if you need to give in and go see a dr. Things like fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pain when you pee, being short of breath other than not wanting to breath deep, stuff like that.
The simplest things I think of are 1) gas trapped in that loop of intestine or 2) pleurisy- an inflammation of your lung lining.
Try taking some tums or mylanta or some sodium bicarb (directions on box.) You could try taking Motrin (if you"re not allergic to it) 'cause sometimes it is good for sharp pain.
Again, I am NOT a doctor, but I have seen some things, and I am a mother which of course qualifies me to give windy advice.
If what you try doesn't work, or if you have any of those other problems, please see a doctor, hope you feel better soon.

First of all, I would not take any pain killers. If it is something serious (and I do hope it is not) pain killers will only mask the problem and you won't be able to answer any questions asked by the doctors. They will also tend to slow your breathing and you won't be able to tell if you are breathing correctly and deeply enough.
Have you done anything physical? More physical than usual? Have you been doing any house work such as painting overhead, sweeping with a push broom? Rough housing? Playing football? Have you had any falls - even just a short distance? Have you been horseback riding? Swimming? Surfing? And not to get personal but have you had any more than physical sexual contact or intercourse in the past ... say, twenty four hours or so? Any of this could be the cause of pain in this particular place. It could be something as simple as a muscle strain or a fractured rib. If it is a fractured rib, unfortunately there is nothing the hospital or a doctor can do about it. They will simply tell you to stay still, they might put you in a cumbersome brace of some kind, or tape you up a bit but other than that, there is not much you can do about either a strain or a fractured rib.
If you have noticed a swollen or raised spot, perhaps you were bitten or stung. That is a possibility as well. Examine the area in a mirror or have someone close to you do it. Is there an area in the center that could be where you were stung or bitten? Have you applied ice or a cold compress to ease the pain?
Stop taking the pain killers and start taking something like advil. It will do two things - ease the pain and if there is any swelling whatsoever (due to a bite, sting, muscle strain, pull, or fracture)it will subside with the advil. You can alternate between advil and tylenol every three to four hours as the medications in the two are different.
I hope this helps and I hope you find some relief. If your breathing gets worse or it is even more painful for you to breathe in deeply, I would seriously suggest going to the emergency room because being short of breath is nothing to mess around with (as much as you don't want to hear that!) ...

Likely a symptom of the flu - certainly not appendicitis...that pain is different. It's probably a good idea to be seen by a physician. You can do that in an urgent-care setting if your family physician isn't readily available, or you might need to be seen in the Emergency Room at the hospital if this does not let up by morning, or if it gets much worse during the night.

it could be a gallbladder or a kidney infection. Both of which can be very dangerous, even fatal if not treated. I had similar pain and had a bad kidney infection. Try a heat pack on the affected area and lay down for awhile. Do not eat or drink anything except a small amount of water. I'd also recommend you take your temperature and write down what you have eaten in the past few hours. This information will be important if you go to the ER tonight

I have the same thing that you explained going on right now. I went to the ER last night and they did blood, & urine which came back normal. they also did a ultrasound on my stomach where my ribs are and did a cat scan and everything came back normal. Not sure if this is the same case as you but its very painful, and they don t have a solution for my case, but the pain is happening for a reason and I didn t do any physical activities that can cause this pain

If it hurts when you inhale it is likely a rib that has become fixated within the demifacet (joint that attaches rib to spine). Have you done any activity like batting, digging yard work etc. This can cause ribs to jam and cause inflammation. Ice will help but if you lie on your stomach and have someone apply pressure on your back in the area of soreness that may help mobilize the rib.
Good luck.
