very carefully :)
Wear Gloves
Ticks carry many diseases, and what you're doing is likely to get you in close contact with one. Wear gloves and be sure to wash your hands THOROUGHLY after you are done.
Grab the Tick Firmly by the HEAD with tweezers
Your aim is to get the ENTIRE tick off of the cat. If you just yank by the body, you might only remove half of the tick. Get as close to the skin as you can get with good tweezers. Note you do NOT want to do inane things like try to burn it with a match, or drown it, or smother it. Remember, the lethal part of the tick is in its saliva, which is already down in your pet's skin. Anything which antagonizes the tick is going to cause the tick to inject MUCH more saliva in. You want to get that tick out before it even knows something is going on.
Pull Straight Out Without Twisting
Again, the head of the tick is embedded into the cat's body. If you twist, you're likely to twist that head right off and leave it behind. It went in straight, it will come out straight. Yes, there are still times that a bit of head will be left behind. And again, it's not the head that is the problem, it's the saliva. So the cat's body will naturally push out the head after a short while. Do the best you can, but don't obsess if there's a small bit left.
Drop the Tick Into Alcohol
Ticks are VERY resiliant and can survive just about anything, including drowning in water. They have an air sac that helps them survive. However, alcohol is a poison. Drop the entire tick into alcohol and in about 10 minutes they should be toast.

You can get rid of the tick with out hurting your cat at all. Get a cotton ball and put some liquid sope on it and then place the cotton ball onto the tick. Hold it there for a few min. The tick will let go and be stuck to the cotton ball.
This is the best way to do it with out scaring your poor cat half to death. This works on dogs people and any other animals.

It is important you don't just rip it out and bery important that it is removed correctly. You need to kill the tick and then remove it with tweezers in tact making sure you don't leave any behind as this can kill your cat. I think you use rubbing alcohol to kill the tick but i can't really remember now. Mine was a false alarm so i never ended up doing what I was told to do. i actually called the vet and one of the nurses there told me what to do. you should call your vet and find out the correct procedure. It is very important that it is done correctly and probably best done by a vet who has done it many times before.

In Boy Scouts I learned the best way to remove ticks is with a credit card like object. Make sure the card-like object doesn't sever the jaws or head from the tick as this may infect the cat with any diseases it may be carrying. Also to make the job easier shave the area around the tick but not the tick itself. The other way you can use the credit-card like object is to go to a vet and pay them with it to remove them.

Forget the baby oil, hot match, etc.
Get tweezers. Working thru the hair will be the hardest part.
Grab the tick as close as you can to the skin. Squeezing there will keep it from busting. Squeezing the abdomen will mash it. Even take a little skin if you have to. Just like us, that first layer is just dead cells.
The key is to get the entire tick. Check the bugger for the head when you have it detached.

Hold the cat with one hand or have someone hold it. Grab the tick as close to the head as possible and pull it out. Run to the toilet, flick the tick in, flush it, and wash your hands with hot water and soap. I pull ticks off my dog every day.

I would get the product shown below from your local vet. They might even sell you a single application rather than the three pack. Rather than try and remove the tick I would apply the frontline and let it work to kill the ticks first.
The very large ticks are easy to spot. The reason I suggest the treatment below is to kill very small ones you might have missed.
