You come home and the door is ajar. You got to the kitchen and see your son's friend going through the drawer, there's a lock pick and your jewerly sitting on the counter next to him and he smells like marijuana. He tells you he was just looking for a piece of paper and a pencil to write your son a note.. you tell him to leave immediately and he does...what would you do afterwards?

You can still call the police.

This happened to my family.

He pretended to my brother that he had to use the bathroom and made a beeline for my parents' bedroom where he found my mother's jewelry box on the dresser.

My mother came upstairs into the house and the door was ajar to their room. He flung something and mumbled the same excuse, he was looking for some paper.

My mother was confused and got distracted and the boy soon left. (my mother was in poor health.)

My father and I came home, she told us what happened and we immediately searched the bedroom. What he flung was a bracelet made of a family heirloom watchfob and we found it behind the dresser. He got away with the clasp from the bracelet, a wedding band, a fake diamond ring, and the real diamond that had come loose from my mother's engagement ring.

I don't remember why, but we didn't call the police that night.
My brother however, did go looking for him. He had heard on the grapevine that he was being looked for and disappeared.

The next day, we called the police and they went with my brother to the boy's house. He wasn't home but his mother gave permission to search his room where they found the wedding band and fake ring.

We found out that he had sold the clasp and the diamond but we never found out to whom and the police told us to count our losses and be more careful about who we let in our home.

Friend of your son or not, I would call the police and report a break-in. I would also talk very seriously with my son and let him know that his "friend" is no longer welcome in the house and that it would be advisible that he (your son) not hang around with him anymore. Explain that if the boy is caught doing something illegal and your son is around him, he could be arrested with the kid and charged with the crime, even if your son was not participating or knew what was going on.

I know its "only marijuana", but the kid has a drug problem and probably needed some money and your house was an easy target. You should also install some deadbolts on the entry doors of the house to prevent this type of thing from happening again.

I wouldn't have told him to leave immediately... I would have called the police with him right there and I would have had him arrested and I would have told the police what I saw.

Son's friend or not, do you want people picking your locks, going through your jewelry, and smoking marijuana in your home?

Call the police and explain what you saw. File a report so this incident can be on record just in case something else happens. Tell your son that this person is no longer welcomed in your home. If your son is underaged, forbid him to continue the friendship.

I'm a cop caller also. The kid needs a reality check before he goes too far. You didn't give his age, I am assuming around 14 or 15. His crime profile is an escalating one. If you don't take action and he kills someone you must share the blame for that murder. I know I wouldn't feel good about it if it happened to me but consider the alternative.

call the police and report an attempted robbery. Press charges. This young man has a problem and covering it up will not help him in the least.

I would have searched him before he left for starters and then had him have a seat while I called his parents to discuss the matter.

~sighs and shakes her head~

From there, my son would be ordered (yes, you CAN order him) never to speak or see him again. Dire punish would ensue with said son if he were caught associating with such a boy again. Birds of a feather...

Definitely call the cops. A crime was being committed, regardless of this person's relationship with your son.

Call the cops, most robbers start with people they know to get their courage up. If you don't report him then chances are he will escalate and either be killed or kill someone breaking into a stranger's home.
