Don't mistake me for a theist just because I asked this question. Atheists are the only ones who comfort themselves without a delusion. Believers just pretend something's there to make things better.

Belief in the potential of human beings, I think. And the remembrance that ultimately, everything is chemistry, and physics, and possibly something that we don't fully understand yet and so call metaphysics. The smallness and wonderfulness and randomness and pain and pointlessness and bright, ridiculous accident of everything that is, and will be gone some day.

The knowledge that I am responsible for my own perception of events that effect my life. If I'm feeling sad over the loss of a loved one, for example, I know that's a reasonable way to feel and I allow myself time to mourn or grieve. To get over it, I focus on the good things about the person I've lost and I'm able to be glad that I had the privilege of knowing them. If I wake up thinking "life sucks" I know that is unreasonable. Once I recognize this, I can work towards changing my attitude and improving the parts of my life I am less than happy with. I think this may be what many people pray for, but instead of going to my "higher power", I realize that the power is in me.

Good question...

I guess I just temper my sad times with the knowledge that whatever the problem is, it can be settled or it will pass in time. If it's a loss, a death - and I've seem plenty - there's comfort in reflecting on my own memories of the person and knowing things were right between us. What else can I say? The world is a tough challenge, sometimes.

I don't pretend to understand the universe. I only know that I have had my share of my allotted time...and done the best with it that I could. Nobody lives forever. Nothing lasts forever. I don't expect it to. I think that only larger egos allow for the luxury that their life means anything other than the ephemeral existence that it is. I don't think our lives, as individuals, are important enough in the cosmos to mean anything.

Lost my father recently, I just think of the happy times that we had. I am sure this may be no comfort to a Christian, but it is helping me at the moment.

Hope in that things cannot get much worse, and support from my friends, family and myself.

Belief in that a new day is a new start, a new challenge, a new adventure.

Very rarely do I have times of sorry, but when I do.. the same things that comfort everyone else. My family, friends, inspirational things like books, movies, songs...

Why do you need a god to comfort you?

I usually keep myself distracted. I figure if my mind is focused on the task at hand, then it doesn't have time to be tortured with sorrow.
