Here's the truth of the matter. Long, long ago, prostitutes in the red light districts started shaving in order to set themselves apart from the fine ladies and attract well paying men. The ladies found out about this and started shaving in order to try and keep their men at home with them instead of in brothels. Thus, the tradition was started and is now common place and expected of all women in this country. If you will notice, many other countries don't shave their underarms or legs.

Certainly a cultural, predominantly "western" cultural phenomenon. Didn't really happen to any degree until the mid 1900s and primarily in the USA. No real reason to do so, but the "sleeveless" styles of dresses that began in the late 1940s and early 1950s as well as the advent of the safety razor during that same time period obviously had a lot to do with the concept of underarm shaving. Prior to then you did not see underarms in public, and before the safety razor was invented, everyone used a straight razor. It was hard enough to shave the face, and virtually impossible to use one to shave the underarms anyway.

Because it is expected and it is more comfortable, says a guy who has continued shaving his armpit hair since starting while doing performance swimming in college.

ok lets put it this way.. women are suppose to smell clean and good right? well the hair traps the oil and sweat and causes odor.. some guys get away with sweat smell like that but girls def don't.

because would you rather be with a girl that has a shaved arm pit or a hairy one? Think about it....Plus it's gross to let it grow and not shave it....
