When in doubt call 911. Especially if your travelling and don't know where you are at. 411 isn't going to magically know your location. The people that answer 911 are most likely the same people that are going to tell the police where you're at, it's not a big deal.

You should call the information line in a non-emergency, but push come to shove, call 911. Explain that it isn't really an emergency, but you don't know who else to call for help.
And in my opinion, being stranded at night on a roadway IS an emergency. If you're broke down in a traffic lane you could very well cause a serious accident by just sitting there.

I would call information and ask to be connected to the non-emergency phone number to the police department in the town or county that your car broke down in. Generally, if you are on an interstate you would want to contact the highway patrol or the state police. Dialing 911 is not a good idea unless it is a life threatening emergency.

Try to leave your home letting someone know your plans for the evening. You can always call the police, they will contact a wrecker service for you or ambulance or fire truck. If you are concerned by the locality of your vehicle you can ask them to check on it while they are on patrol. Of course, if they have alot of crime that night then you maybe on the back burner. but I have my wrecker service number programmed into my cell phone. My insurance pays for the tow within a few dollars. i am sure you have friends, family and people who you have a relationship that in a moment of distress you can ask for help. I personally prefer to be independent and handle the problem myself. I like to deal with issues head on. You choices are endless. It is based on your need and urgency.

No you can't...call information to connect you with a local police department.. Being stranded is not an emergency. Information can also hook you up with a cab or a tow

If you don't have any other number to call, you should definitely call 911. If anything, the Officer should at least get you to a safe location.
Some departments have emergency road numbers to direct you to.

No...only if you belive your life is in immedeate danger. 911 is for emergency calls only. If you want, some cell phone companys offer road side assistance for customers, or you can sign up for AAA, its a little pricy but worth it in situations like this. You can also check online for other roadside assistance programs. On some highways they have call boxes that you can use to call out as well.

Also look on the back of your driver's license. There may be a roadside emergency number listed, depending on the state.

Yes you can. The police can then come and they will call a tow truck for you.
