I know a doctor who rides 30 miles each way. Rain, snow, doesnt matter - he rides every day.
I myself only ride 10 miles....but then I do the 20 mile bike trails on weekends. =]

I used to ride about 5 miles each way. I stretched it to about 10 by riding on the beach as the season progressed and the days got longer.
I did a face plant on concrete (My helmet saved my front teeth and my nose but not my glasses - I needed new ones anyway.) trying to jump the chain at Playa DelRey. Thanks to me, they don't have one there any more. (A lifeguard patched me up.)
I stopped biking to work when I took a corner too fast and slid into a traffic light post and broke four ribs, cracked a vertebrae, and stabbed myself so deep with the cel phone in my Jersey pocket that I had to go in to the doc two or three times a week for a couple of months to have the old packing pulled out and fresh packing stuffed in.
But don't let me discourage you!

During a time I had no other transportation, I bicycled 9 miles to work one way.

I would say 5-7 miles each way. More than that only if there is good bike infrastructure.

if i didn't have to ride it on the freeway and didn't have the chance to have stupid people try to destroy my bike in an unsecured parking lot then i would ride it as far as 5 miles or more

When gas hits $5 a gallon may have to entertain this question.
