I have a miniature dachshund that's just over a year old. She has red bumps and red skin on her chest under her front legs. She's had it for a while and it seems to come and go. What is it? It kind of looks like a rash, but she doesn't seem to be itchy there. Is it something that I need to be concerned about?

I'm asking this here and not my vet because I'm on vacation right now, about 12 hours away from my vet.

It could be a skin allergy. My dog has bad skin allergies. When it gets that bad, you need to take her to the vet, because the allergy may have rolled into a skin infection. They will give you antibiotics and an allergy pill or shot and she should be fine. Good luck!

Yes, you need to be concerned. Your dog has a disease called "Allergic Dermatitis". That's what I believe. It is important that you wash your dog every week with antibacterial shampoo until you are able to go to the vet. As it seems like, your dog has been getting worse. Visit the site below for more information and it was a pleasure helping you. By the way, it is important that you keep your dog out of the kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms. Your dog has a virus that can spread. Make sure that you use "Dettol" when washing your hands. Your dog could possibly die if you don't take it to the vet. Good luck and I wish your dog the best.

It sounds like a Staph infection. Try bathing her in an antibacterial soap such as Dial. Leave the soap on for a couple of mins. Then rinse thoroughly! The active ingredient in it is Triclyosin. My vet used to give me a Triclyosin soap for my dog when she would get Staph. If that doesn't work try an anti-fungal shampoo. If neither works, take her to the vet. It is not a life-threatening problem, so try these things first and maybe save some money! Good luck!

It may be contact dermatitis so have the vet check to see for sure. Make sure she eats the same food and doesn't get any human food that could either be causing the rash or adding to the problem. The vet can and should do a skin scrape to make sure it isn't mites or something along those lines.

It seems like some sort of allergic reaction, maybe to something you are using to wash her bedding?
If you bathe her do you use a dog shampoo or a human one as the human ones are too strong for some pets.
If you are worried that she may be in distress due to the rash or if you feel that the lumps grow or seep pus or any other bodily fluid i would definately take her to the vet!
Hope Ive helped!!
Hope she feels better soon!

Both of my dogs had the same thing. Your dog has chiggers. They get it from digging in the ground and laying in the grass. Take your dog to the vet and the vet will give you pills to give your dog. The chiggers will go away within 2 days, but continue giving your dog the pills til it is all gone. The vet will also give you a dog shampoo to use. Bathe your dog using the shampoo once every 2 weeks.

Sounds like a contact dermatitis. She is allergic to something she is coming into contact with. Maybe the grass outside of something in the house. Allergies are tough to pin down and you should go to the vet to make sure this is not something else and more serious. I have dachshunds and although none of mine have allergies it is not all that unusual in smooth coats that are bare in those areas.

If she has had it for a while, it would be a good idea to take her to the vet. You cannot really expect a diagnosis on the internet from people who have not even seen the "rash".
Otherwise, could you at least post a close up picture of it?

When I was a kid we had a dachshund, and he had a grass allergy, kind of like the rash I get if I sit on grass in shorts. If it's not irritating him, and you're certain it's not fleas, I'd just wash her belly with warm water when he comes in from outside. Being that low to the ground causes her to be in contact wiht the grass more than he would be if she were a greyhound. ;-)

since dachs. are so low to the ground it could be a fungus or bacteria from the dirt or even moisture.
there area anti fungal shampoos that will clear it up.
i had a mini greyhound and the vet started her on oral meds and i also had to wash her every other day let her sit in the shampoo for 20 min. and it went away.
