They pushed a "Gray Area" & got busted. It wasn't a chiseled-in-stone thing like Junior's wing mounts, it was an unwritten thing that the inspectors used their own discretion on.
The reasoning is, that Nascar doesn't want anyone screwing with the COT. They want them built to their specs. Problem is, it's not really clear what some of those specs are.
I figure both teams will catch the same kick in the pants that the 8 team got. However.....
Expect both teams to appeal any further penalties, on the grounds that there are no specs on those areas of the car on the books.
Bottom line, Nascar needs to be more precise about every inch of the car's specs if they don't want the teams "massaging" body panels that fall between the templates.
Perhaps some sort of projected, computer generated grid to build the bodies against? Perhaps have all the body panels fabricated on presses in one place, for all the teams, like real cars, so they're all exactly the same? There has to be an answer, but writing the rules in the inspection line doesn't cut it.

I don't see why they would intentionally cheat at a track like this. It's not like there's a huge aerodynamic advantage to be had on a road course. Had this been a speedway of some sort, I would be much more skeptical. I think this was pushing the envelope and exceeding a gray area, but the penalties will most likely be the same regardless. Hopefully a black and white rule will come from this.
I'm looking forward to the race even more though, now that Gordon is starting at the back. Watching him come up through the field is going to be more fun than watching him run up front all day long. I predict a top five on Sunday for the 24.

Respectfully, on top of the practice restriction they should get $100,000.00 fine per car and both crew chiefs suspended for six races to keep things on a "fair playing field" as they want with the COTs. It wasn't a wing bracket violation like JR (that didn't give no clear edge over the field). It was a areo-modification that should serve a higher penalty like Waltrip's and I think that is already being carried out.
However, Jeff and Jimmy has already been penalized from practice, so I see it's already not gonna be the same. If there is anymore judgment calls made, it maybe far less than what JR and Tony got in terms of points/fines/suspensions of crew chiefs...or much harsher since it was two cars for the same thing. Anyway you look at it, Rick will get a double whammy of what ever it is.
Now, till Judge NASCAR drops the sentence we can have our fun with theories.

i'm heavily bored with folk misspelling Jimmie Johnson. Jimmy Johnson is in touch interior the NFL, no longer NASCAR, so spell it ultimate. i do no longer think of that Jeff Gordon would purposely wreck out of the race through fact NASCAR needed to invent this feud, rather, he lost 5 positions interior the factors. have not you been paying interest? NASCAR isn't staged, and that i don't be responsive to why you assert they have good sportsmanship the previous few years, through fact I even have viewed multiple wrecks and fights on the top of races (i ought to furnish you examples, yet there is not any element to doing that), possibly you're no longer seeing an analogous races i'm. Jimmie Johnson later complete thirty first, and Jeff Gordon complete twenty 2d. of course Jeff would be mad at him through fact he ran him off the song.

I think they should get the same thing as Dale Jr's team got. I also see that everyone don't get the same equipment at the Hendrick camp. I notice that Mears and Busch's cars passed. The plan to win more races backfired and I say HA! HA!

Look out Hendrick Hater up there is a real bad M F'er on the computer here!!! Quit being a punk a** B****. Is it time for the baby' s bottle and nap?
Remember although Nascar didn't like what they did, it is not in ink that it is not. I still think they will get the same as Eury did, but if not, it's kind of hard to give penalties for something not in the books. You can bet it will be in the books by Tonight though.

I probably agree with them starting last. Their cars have made it through inspection now , so i think it should be business as usual until next week when Nascar decides the penalties.
I believe Nascar will feel pressured to give them at least the same penalty as Jr. faced.
I'm not saying what went on was right, but Gordon is still in the points lead if you take away 100 points right now. He is 264 points in front of 2nd place.

They deliberately tried to push the rules. They admitted that they flared the front fenders between template checking spots cause they thought it would be legal to do. They were told it wasn't. It is interesting that Jeff and Jimmie got the change but Kyle and Mears didn't. So much for everyone getting the same equipment. They will get the same fines and penalties as Jr and DEI as they should..

Can you say conspiracy. This is weak on NASCAR's part. There is no template provided by NASCAR for the parts in question but the officials didnt like it so they deemed it unsuitable and needed to be repaired. I wonder if NASCAR is bending to the will of some fans who dont like the HMS domination and want to see some dirt on the super team this season. Again this is just speculation on my part, and i hope its not true for the integrity of the sport. Its just another avenue of thought
But, as much as i dont want to see it, i bet the suspensions will be the same, still to harsh in my opinion the points dont really mean anything to drivers in the top 8 really, bc at this point Gordon and Johnson are gonna make the chase and then its all back to nothing, I think the real blow is not having your crew chief for 6 races, even though they are around in the shops. That i feel is a little overkill, I understand there needs to be accountability for a teams actions and agree that suspensions should be issued, but 6 weeks is a little long and i think NASCAR really needs to come down from their COT throne. It is not deserving of half the praise they shower on it.

I think they need to. But that is my opinion. They are both good drivers but if they are going to cheat I think it is fair that they are starting 41 and 42. Junior got docked some heavy points plus Tony got suspened 6 races. I think junior is doing better without him though!!
