I use Family Tree Maker, and it works OK. I wish it was more flexible.

Family Tree Maker from http://www.familytreemaker.com can be updated to work with Vista. It has lots of bells and whistles, often is bundled with a subscription to Genealogy.com or Ancestry.com. Most of my genealogy correspondents use this software packages.

Personal Ancestral File from the Church of Latter Day Saints is free from http://www.familysearch.org

PAF has less bells and whistles than the commercial programs, but it follows (in fact, created) all the standards. I would be surprised if it has trouble with Vista.

Many other commercial sites offer software.
Whatever you do, make sure the software can export to a GEDCOM file, so that you can share with others who don't have the same hardware.

I've got both PAF and FTMaker loaded and am happy with both of them, though I primarily use the latter because of its tree-drawing capability. Hope your experience is good: I'm sticking with XP for the time being...

My sis entered everything in Family Tree Maker, but then in order for me to use it too, I have to have the same version.
I recently joined Ancestry.com and have found it very easy to work with.
