My husband and I are layed back people. We are looking for small dog, We recently dog sat for a chihuaha. He was perfect. Didn't bark love to hang out with us. He is a lovable dog, house trained, he got a long with friends and family and kids. I know in most cases Chihuaha's are not like that. What other dogs have these charatateristics?

Okay, the thing is, some dogs are easier to train than others. No dog is born house-trained, or sociable, or lovable. Some have tendencies towards these characteristics (I've never seen a ferocious Golden Retriever), but it really, really depends on the trainer/owner.

All puppies are active. So in your case, I'd look for an older dog. A Golden or a Labrador would be great for you, they're intelligent, lovable, and very sociable.

edit: Oops, I read that you want a smaller dog. Chihuahua's usually aren't good with kids (depends on owner, again), and because of their small size, are prone to getting injured.

I would recommend - Shih Tzu, Poodle, Bichon Frise, Boston Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Pug.

Maybe the Cavalier or Shih Tzu more than the others, they're usually very laid back.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are affectionate, outgoing, and love kids. They can be a bit expensive, but are great dogs. You should also look into Shih Tzu, but check with the breeder to see if the parents are noisy because some can be barkers.

Check out www.dogbreedinfo.com They have lists dog by characteristics, such as good apartment dogs, kid-friendly dogs, and so on. You can look for a dog that has several of the characteristics you seek. Once you choose a breed, the local shelter or rescue groups is a great way to find an adult that is already housetrained and you can see its full personality.

A dog's attitude depends on how it was raised and its age, too.

Most lap dog breeds can be mellow if they get good owners who give them consistent exercise, love and a little peace. They become insecure wild basket cases when left alone too many hours in the day, not taken for walks on a regular schedule, or otherwise treated as less than a valued companion.

I like chihuahas, poodles, maltese, boston terriers, cocker spaniels among the smaller breeds.

Also remember that how you socialize and train your dog has a lot to do with how pleasant they are to be around.

Try looking in a shelter to meet a dog you can learn about before getting, and also check www.akc.org for information on purebreds that might be right for you. Always look for a reputable breeder so that they can help you choose the right one for your family, and also have a much better chance at getting a healthier dog, if you decide on a purebred.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are my most favorite toy dogs. They are smart, easty to train, love everyone and do not bark as much as other small dogs.

You should always read up about any breed you may be considering.

Here is a link to a very good website that has general information on different breeds and their temperments and behaviour.

After all it is only you who can judge what dog is right for you and your lifestyle.

Good Luck in finding your new companion :]

Pugs are very laid back dogs as well. They just need a lot of loving though, and they love to play, but they're amazing dogs, at least i love them. =]
