why do masses of birds settle on my house only then do mexican wave above my head at dusk?

It may be that your house is one of the tallest structures in the area. Or that it's a cool place during the day. Or there's a lot of food that they can easily spot then get to using your house as a vantage point. At dusk they go home (whereever that is) to roost.
