They are similar, but abstaining is generally viewed as softer in tone and often seen as a choice. Also, forbidden implies an outside power forcing their will upon you.

TO abstain means its your own choice to not partake of something or do something. Some people abstain from certain foods or places, matters or things.

Forbidden as a word has the sense of you be disallowed to be a part of some thing, person , matter or event. The choice element is not there.

A bit of an example is the tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the garden.
Adam and Eve were told to abstain from eating or even touching the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and evil.. they still had a choice to do so or not. And we all know what that choice was.

But after eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.. they were forbidden to eat of the Tree of Life.. and driven out of the Garden of Eden.. an Angel with a flaming sword was even placed to guard the tree..

Hope this helps

No!I abstain from alcohol through choice,but could have a drink if I chose to,therefore it's not forbidden to me.Inevitably,if something is forbidden,there are a lot of people out there who will find it more attractive simply because of that!

No, abstain is a verb that means to stay away from, or not partake in. Something that is forbidden is not allowed. So, I could say: Even if I lived in a land where sex was forbidden, that doesn't mean I would abstain from it.

As a couple of examples it says:

1Th 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality;

1Th 5:22 Abstain from every form of evil.

Abstain means to " to hold one’s self off, refrain"

I would think if your father asks you to abstain from sniffing glue or having sex he would not be pleased if you did it any way and you are going against his wishes so yeah you could say it is forbidden and the same thing just old fashioned words.

you need to ask a christian really they are good at interpreting things in a way that means something in there life .....sorry I atheist

I am not a JW. I used to think it was ok to give & receive blood, I even donated blood. But now looking back I think it is not okay. My sister who is dying of cancer had a blood transfusion some years ago, she is the only one in our family who had a blood transfusion, she is the only one with breast cancer. There is no history of it in our family at all as far back as we can go. I can only wonder what was in the blood that she had a very bad reaction to? It is a personal choice, but just be aware that blood has a lot of disease in it & even though they ask a lot of questions it does not cover all the possibilities. Also people are not truthful when they answer the questions. So anything could happen in a blood transfusion or even years later.

To abstain means that you choose not to do something, If someone else stops you doing something or makes a law against it it is forbidden.

Abstain means don't do, restrain yourself. Forbidden sounds like their are consequences which I imagine follow with abstain, forbidden is just a more potent word.

No. Abstain to avoid something completely by your will. Forbidden is to be kept away from something (fence around grass), that someone else has put up.
