First off, the 9x19mm cartridge is significantly larger than a 22LR cartridge. Both are almost the same length, but the 9mm is .38 inches wide, where as the 22 is only .22 inches wide, giving the 9mm nearly 3 times the volume of powder.

I just started shooting recently, and I am very grateful that I started with the 22LR handgun I bought. For one, it allows you to become familiar with all the principles of safe handling and the marksmanship of firing a weapon without distractions. 22LR handguns are much cheaper ($200-400 instead of $500-1000 for a 9mm), and the ammunition is literally one fourth the price of 9mm parabellum (where I live, CCI MiniMags 40gr 22LR are $6.95 for 100 rounds, where as Federal American Eagle 115gr 9mm parabellum is $14.95 for 50).

If you are a new shooter, the noise from a 9mm is still very loud even with ear protection. I have 21 dB ear muffs; if someone at the range is firing their 9mm in the adjacent lane, the noise is almost like having someone slam a dictionary just next to your head. The 22LR lets you get used to the noise and recoil of a weapon. I would recommend getting used to that first before going with the much louder and harder kicking 9mm handguns.

Lastly, it may seem like a waste of money to buy a 22LR handgun if you do want a 9mm, but it will let you cheaply find out what kind of hands you have. Handguns come in a large variety of sizes and shapes, and finding one that is comfortable for your hands it key if you want to shoot. A cheaper 22LR will let you test exactly what kind of grips and sizes will work with your hands, allowing you to purchase a much more expensive 9mm that is comfortable for you. A few things you may want to evaluate with a 22LR are whether you like having a finger grooves in your grip, and whether you can comfortably reach the slide release, magazine release, and safety (if one exists) with your hand. Once you answer those questions, you can double check for the same features in a 9mm. However, it's very difficult to really tell what the answer is without putting in around 500-2,000 rounds at the range, and getting used to the whole experience. Once you burn out the novelty, you can find out what your preferences and dislikes are.

Well, from the "old school" I would say a .22 revolver. But since you threw in a semi-auto round, the 9mm is not a bad gun to start with as far as recoil and expense. There are plenty of places out there to pick up a decent, even used, 9mm pistol. Ammo can be found almost anywhere in the world for it as well.

For a starter pistol in 9mm, a S&W, Ruger P-sries, Taurus and if you are lucky, even a Glock. There are others out there which are also as good, but these are the most common ones usually found. All would make a great starter pistol for a semi-auto.

I do not recommend spending a huge amount of money on a brand new, expensive gun until you have had some time shooting a few different models/makes/calibers and finding out what you like in a weapon. Just picking the "coolest" looking one in the case for X amount of dollars is not smart shopping when it comes to guns. You may buy it, shoot it and hate it, or maybe you will find that just isn't comfortable for you, which means that it could be unsafe or dangerous.

Find some friends or family with guns, ask them to take you shooting and try out several for free first. After you have an idea of what you want, then go shopping. Some ranges even rent guns for a small fee.

Remember one thing, though. Like many other things, everyone has their own opinion. Many will say "get this one", or "that one sucks", but that is just their opinion.

You need to form your own, then get yourself what YOU like and want, not what someone said you should get.

-Just my opinion

The 9mm is the larger caliber round. Depending on how much money you want to spend on a gun and ammo, the .22 would be cheaper to shoot. There is a little kick to a 9mm compared to the .22, but will a little practice you will easily get use to it. I would go for the 9mm. Have fun!

The term caliber or calibre designates the interior diameter of a tube or the exterior diameter of a wire or rod.

A .22 caliber round has a .22 inch diameter or 5.588 mm. A 9mm round has a diameter of 9mm or .35 inches.

So a 9mm round has a larger diameter then a .22 caliber round. There are many different types of each round with a wide range of lengths and explosive power.

Learn with a 22, definitely. 9mm is 35 caliber and has the added inconvenience of being a round made for self-loaders, and if you're a beginner, you want to start with (and maybe stay with) a revolver.

A length assessment between the two calibers isn't available except the two weapons are named. There are incredibly super .22 semi-automatics that could dwarf countless the concealable 9mm semis. the two calibers are available a quantity pistol sizes. The 9mm bullet is heavier than the .22 bullet, has greater effective effect on the right song, and produces greater effective balk. The .22 is greater precise and the ammunition is plenty greater comparatively decrease priced.

A 9mm round is bigger. As for which to use both are reliable inexpensive ammo for pistol shooting and have modest to minimal recoil.

Go for the .22. It is fun to shoot and the ammo is dirt cheap. next go for the .380 which is a 9mm. "short". It's a great gun, and everything you will need for fun and home protection. Only my opinion...
