I work with a variety of meditation methods, and they all suit different purposes. The most common is probably just the focusing on the breath -- although of course for all types of meditation things like your surroundings and posture and so forth all come into play. Simple awareness meditation, very focused Buddha deity meditation, sound meditation -- it just sort of depends upon where my mind is and what I need to do to settle it to simple awareness and calm abiding.
One technique that I have found to be particularly powerful and transforming is Tonglen. Also known as "taking and giving" or "exchanging self for others," it can be incredibly healing.
And, of course, meditation upon emptiness and the Heart Sutra.

Quiet place, sitting, close my eyes and let my mind clear of everything and then focus on the centre of my mind.
I've just read that back and it doesn't make a lot of sense.I find explaining how I meditate difficult.Sorry.

It is best to meditate on your heart beats, the heart beat is in perfect harmony with universal rhythm and it is nearest too.

I just sit down, and I focus on my breathing. I then imagine a white light going up and down my spine (up as I breath in and down as I breathe out) it really helps focus the mind and keep it off things like "Oh I've got to go and buy milk" etc.

I just pray and think about what's on my mind, and I ask God to talk to me. Things come into my mind.
Whatever works for you is what you need to do. Try different things.
Good luck!
