I hate all these places that ask for tips when all they do is stand behind the counter and punch numbers on a register! Coffee shops, Juice bars, delis, etc. There's virtually no service at all.

I'm not talking alcohol, people! I'm talking about somewhere where I walk in, order, pay and walk out with my drink.

BTW, Yoho, servers do NOT make minimum wage. They make $2 - 3 per hour plus tips.

Yes, I just answered another question where I said that the next thing you know, there will be tip jars on public transportation and at the teller's window of the bank.

Everyone seems to want a tip for simply doing their job. I tip at full-service restaurants, at a beauty salon, the bartender that makes my martini, the grocery delivery guy, and the pizza delivery guy. I'll tip the newspaper person if he makes sure my paper doesn't get wet and I'll tip a barrista if a get a beverage that involves more than pouring coffee into a cup.

But that's it! There's this tip bandwagon that everyone seems to want to get on. In college, I worked at a small grocery that also made ice cream cones. It never occurred to me that I should have put a tip cup out, because it was my job to scoop ice cream.

People either need to get a better paying job, or stop expecting getting extra $$$ for simply doing their jobs.

That's my rant and I'm sticking to it. :) Julie

Yes!! I usually don't especially when all they do is hand you a cup and you get your own drink.

I also hate that tips are expected for subpar service in restaurants. While I realize that servers don't make much in the way of an hourly wage, they should at least earn their tip instead of expecting customers to subsidize them automatically.

No service? Then make your own sandwich or cappucino and see how easy it is to get it the way you like it. Besides that they do not just punch a register. They also clean, prepare, and serve you. I am not trying to be derogatory, but if you think it is that easy then get a part time job doing the same. You will find out that it is not as easy as sitting on your butt at a computer or typing. I honestly think that you are not trying to put these people down by saying they do nothing but punch a register, but it is kind of insulting.

yea definitely not cool, mooching off the real servers that need it.

the only thing about it is if you are kind of a regular (or becoming one), in reality, it will prolly get you recognised quicker (therfor you MAY get better service, maybe... they for sure take it for granted)

money talks louder than your thank you, in that specific case, so who really knows.
i don't know how retail shops (juice bars, coffee houses, etc)like that got in the habit of putting out "tip jars", i wouldn't think management would be cool with that

If they are standing behind a bar making coffee drinks or juice drinks, aren't they doing the same as a bartender? Do you tip a bartender? I usually do. I certainly don't throw in a lot, though!

It's b/c of people not tipping and being jerks that make the service in these areas not good. If you visit the same place often, and tip, they will learn you are not one of those people and give you better service. Try it. It works.

tip a waiter or waitress but if it´s behind a counter and they do nothing for you i don´t see the point. I myself work behind a counter in a food service but don´t expect tips cause i don´t serve or wait on tables!!

I do not tip those places - I do tip bartenders cause they have the choice to make me a good drink or an okay drink!

Yes! I am sick of all the tipping! And what I hate most is that during discussions of what is appropriate to tip, the amount of disposable income you happen to have is NEVER accepted as a good reason not to.

I am usually a very good tipper. There are times I just don't have the money. When I am desperate to get my eyebrows waxed, for instance, and I only have a little money, I won't not get them waxed for fear of undertipping. I'll simply tip more next time!

You know, I just totally hate tipping in general!!! I don't get a tip for my job!
I think the places that employ these individuals should just pay them more, I'm sure they make enough money to do so!
