You have to be 21 to pour alcohol in a public establishment. You don't have to go to "school" for it, but you should probably know how to mix the most important and essential drinks to any bar. If you have never had experience bartending, I would definitely save yourself the embarrassment of applying for that job by reading up and memorizing some drink recipes first.
Bartenders can make pretty good money, but you have to take the good with the bad. Long hours, customers can be obnoxious when drunk, and you're on your feet the whole time. They also have to keep the bar clean, wash dishes and stock all the liquors. Also, if you're a female, prepare to be hit on by drunk guys!

I think it's a pretty fun job. But it's a lot of time on your feet, late nights and weekends. Some places will train you, but some want experience or bartending classes. Pay ranges from minimum wage to $15-$20 an hour DOE and what kind of place it is. Like, a country club or spa will pay more than the neighborhood dive bar. You're also responsible for keeping things stocked, the bar area clean, nightly cleanup, taking orders for people sitting at the bar, possibly running food from the kitchen, pretty much anything the manager wants if you have a lull. And keeping the register in order.
But if you're willing to do nights and weekends and don't mind working hard, it is actually fun. You meet all kinds of interesting people.
Oh, and around here, generally a place won't hire if you're 18, they trust someone over 21 better.

You don't need to go to a school; most places will train you. You must have a liquor license which is around $15. You have to be 21 to serve alcohol at most places but there are a few where you can be 18.
Bartenders get paid a low hourly wage, maybe $5 an hour but if it's a good busy bar you'll make a lot of tips. Bartending is fun and besides making drinks, you'll have to keep the bar clean.

Bartending is a lot of fun. I did it for many years. One of the last jobs I had was as a banquet bartender at a fancy hotel here in Memphis. I got paid anywhere between $12 - $19 an hour plus tips. I made killer money that year. The tough part was when they opened the doors, you immediately had 300 thirsty people that wanted a drink 5 minutes ago and had to try to hammer them out. Tough at first, but very good money.

Having read a few of the other answers, I can tell you that there are actually a variety of answers to your questions; really depends on where you live.
I just gave up bartending a few months ago, where I was getting paid $6.50 / hr. plus my tips... which were nothing to sneeze at.
My boss would not hire anyone who had gone to a bartending school, but they are out there & most offer job placement assistance.
In some states, you can serve drinks at 18... at that age, you're "legal," and they can hold you liable for any mishandling of the job.
Bartenders don't just get to pour drinks. In most states (if not all), there is a lot of responsibility in bartending, legally and ethically. To top it off, you may have to "bounce," clean up, stock, and have to deal with the patrons.
It's not always easy, but it can be a lot of fun.

Bartending is so much fun. You have to be 21 in order to bartend. as for pay you get like $2.13 a hour plus tips, it doesn't sound like a lot but when I bartend it usually comes out to about $30-$50 a Hour depending on how good you are and how busy you are. I did not go to school to learn I learned working in a restaurant. As for what else you have to do is maybe take food orders depending on if your working in a restaurant bar, the big thing you have to do is Just be Friendly!! You should give it a try it a lot of fun!!

i bartend and ill tell u, it has its moments. there are many different ttypes of bars out there... u have the busy night clubs, packed bars, biker bars, airport bars, up scale martini bars, dive bars, restaurant bar, service bar, beach bar and the low business neighborhood bar. each has a different function, different sales levels and different liquor selection. all of these serve customers which require somewhat of a customer service skill. in most state u need to be 18 to serve, others 21 and pay is subjective to the bar. some bars pay 2.15 all the way to 10 +. youll find most at 3.65 or so, just enough to cover taxes. schools are out there but most will tell you schools are a waste or forget what you learned in school. i agree with this beacuse you are already learning bad habits. an establishment would rather train you then bring in used goods. they also serve food, promote good will, know anything about everything and answer silly questions on yahoo
