The video on you tube gives some good casting techniques. I like to rock my sinker before I start my quick half twist forward to cast. I want my momentum thrusting forward to give me extra distance. Also I let out about two feet of line, sinker to the pole tip, this allows me to rock the sinker like a pendulum. It takes practice and a strong back.

Long rod good reel with large capacity for 10 to 20 lb line the proper sinker choice and style of casting are major factors in getting distance.
You need to learn to load the rod while casting and timing for the release to gain the best distance.
I have 12'6" rod that with a 2 to 4oz sinker with hook and bait I could hit with a pedulum cast standing around 100 to 125 yards using 12 lb mono.(I can reach farther with special rigs)The hook rig is a single dropper set with a 4 to 8 inch dropper loop!
The best thing I can say is I would practise casting in an open field with marker set out to marked distances.Once I reached a goal I worked on a longer marker.I practise with a usable rig to match situations I have at the beach so I can learn if I may have to use a skock leader or if tangles and what may happen.

Steve,
best thing to do is go down the beach and ask for first hand advice...you can't learn this stuff in front of a computer. I have been fishing many years and still learn new stuff everytime i go out. Ask a surfcaster for advice and they should be more than happy to show you.. Some of us make look like a rough bunch but when we get to talkin fishin you'll see how it sparks us up and how we love to pass on traditions. Then all you need is practice and you will develop your own technique and will be amazed how far you can punt that out there.Good Luck!

They key to any long cast is maximizing your angular momentum when you are about to release your line. If you swing your rig or lure in a pendulum or whip around motion and release your line as it comes directly out of that motion then you will gain the maximum out of any cast no matter what gear i guarentee you..

get on the field, you wont learn on the beach, try the off the ground cast, if your not a big fella use a long drop.. practice as much as you can and it will come. read sea angler, they have some cracking articles on casting... i read it solely for these and i'm a carp angler...good luck.

split cane rod-- fixed spool reel and plenty of practise, once you master the art then move to a multiplier reel.
