"Gnostic" comes from a Greek word usually translated as "knowledge," although this is misleading. Gnosis is not intellectual knowledge, but direct spiritual experience.
The Christian "gnostics" generally interpreted the Christ legend as a hieratic fable, an allegory for the spiritual path that every individual must explore for himself, rather than as a unique historical event that happened to a particular "god-man." They would say "It's not enough to be a Christian; one must become a Christ." They dismissed all the elaborate bureaucracy of the orthodox Church as not merely unnecessary, but a hindrance to spiritual progress. For this reason they were attacked with furious zeal by the early Church Patriarchs.
See Elaine Pagel's excellent books on the subject, particularly "The Gnostic Gospels," "Adam, Eve & the Serpent" (which should be required reading for all women who fancy themselves "Christian"), and "The Origin of Satan."

There are books left out of the bible one of which was written by Thomas. It presents Jesus in a totally different light than the other 4 gospels, actually a lot closer to Buddhism, so the church yanked them as heresy. I like the Gnostic gospels personally. I think they are more true to who Jesus was as they were written by people very close to him.
