Biting is huge! If a dog is willing to actually make contact and bite that is a very big problem. Don't fool yourself and think it was an accident or the dog didn't mean it. Dogs are very aware of where their mouths are and what they are doing with them. If it is the first offense, and depending on the severity of the incident, they will probably put the dog on "probation" for a period of time. If it happens again they may seize the dog and put him to sleep. Not to mention the fines that you may be charged and the potential for the parents suing you, etc., etc. You may want to reconsider owning a dog that bites. I know that your dog is probably the sweetest thing in the world to you (am I right?) but sounds like a HUGE liability.

There are never any guaranties that a dog won't bite someone. Just because a dog is "sweet" and has been obedience trained, that doesn't mean the dog can't be 'triggered' to be aggressive. Pitt Bulls have gotten a pretty bad reputation over the years and it's too bad. If you do your research, you will find out that not only have Pitts gotten a bad rap, other powerful dogs have as well. Pitts are usually on the nightly news after they have bitten someone, killed or maimed someone but there are other dogs that can do just as much damage. I am a dog trainer but it's impossible for me to know what kind of relationship you had with your dog prior to this incident. Many times, dog owners don't see subtle changes going on with their dogs until something happens and they call a trainer or behavioral specialist as the last resort. Your dog may have viewed the child as 'prey' and for whatever reason decided to attack. Even if the child is going to be physically alright, he or she will be traumatized by this event for the rest of their life. I feel sad for the child and your dog. Pitt Bull dogs were bred to fight bulls. They are powerful and unfortunately when they bite, they hang on with their powerful jaws to bring the large bull down. When a dog attacks another animal or person, attempting to break up the fight will only get you injured and even killed. The dog's brain goes into the 'fight or flight' mode and the dog doesn't stop until the fight is over. The best way to break up a dog fight is to get behind your dog, grab his legs and sweep him away from the other dog. This breaks the dog's concentration and hopefully you can gain back control. It helps if someone else is grabbing the other dog or if it's a person being attacked, hopefully that person will have time to get away. Saying "goodbye" to your dog isn't beneficial to your dog, it's only an emotional feeling for you. Dogs don't feel emotions. Next time you decide to get a dog, do your research and find a dog that is bred to have a gentle, non-aggressive temperament. Don't pick a breed that was bred to kill.

I have a friend who's dog (an Akita) bit a child. It had to be quarantined for like 10 days, and they had to show proof of rabies shots. In my friends case though, the child and her parents were told numerous times to stay away from the dog, which they ignored and the kid got bit! Not saying she deserved it, but my friend went through hell because of that. She ended up giving the dog away. Now shes being sued. If you feel your dog did it to just be mean, spare it any further agony and have it humanely euthenized.

In most states, a pitbull that bit, is put down. In some states they get a second chance. Plan on getting cited for it. Also, plan on being sued by the kids parents. Hope his shots are up to date or that compunds the problem. I'd get rid of the animal before someone gets hurt bad.
Good luck

The cops or animal control will prob come and talk to you, want to look at the dog, etc. Do not let them in your house unless they have a warrant. Same with the animal control because if they dont and they come in that is breaking the law. You might get sewed by the parents of the child too. If so your argument should be, where were the parents to the child and where was the child when they got bit (trespassing?), also where was your dog? (In its yard, out lose, what?) If you were being a responsible dog owner. It is the ignorance of the parents and of the child that got bit! I hope you the best because I love and own American Pit Bull Terriers and things like this happen and then bans of our breed happen! NOT GOOD!!
GOOD LUCK!

GIVE MORE DETAILS. EXPLAIN SITUATION, HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? I CAN'T HELP YOU MUCH IF YOU DON'T GIVE EXTRA DETAILS!!! ANYWAY, I'LL TRY.

The dog in issue should have all shots. He may be put to sleep UNLESS you can tell them and prove them that the kid was somehow provoking your dog.

Please don't lie to the police, i'm not telling u are a liar, but still...

He may be quarantined and see how his behavior is usually like. You should get people who know him, besides yourself to help you out with this.

If he is a really good manered and frienly dog and has never attacked any other person or dog, he may have a chance.

First of all, work to focus on what's going on. If police or someone else goes for your dog, work on getting this to a judge!!!

Still, I would be able to help you more with more details.

I'm so sorry...
Good luck.

If you need help and provide me more details, I may be able to recommend you somebody or try to help you more. So, if you do please email me to brbnryn@yahoo.com

They will want to see a current rabies vacs and see the dogs license. They may take the dog from you depending on what the laws are concerning bully breeds and bully breed mixes in your area. You may receive a fine and have to pay all medical costs involved in the child's medical treatment. If you have homeowner's/renter's insurance check with them to see if they cover the medical costs.

My dog bit someone. It wasn't bad, but we had to put him on this aggrestion list thingy. It wasn't a bad bite. And we didn't have to put him down. Also he hasn't bitten anyone in a little over a year. But it all depends on the situation. But they will check all the liscens and stuff. And go though all that.

Depending on the situation, you may have to register your dog as agressive. This will limit what you can do with your dog, but will not stop you from getting additional training so... Go get more training. Even if the kid was being abusive, you need to give your dog tools to deal with bad situations other than using his teeth, just like people with anger management problems need tools to deal with it. (Not saying your dog has anger management issues, it's just an analogy!)

Unforutnately you will probably have to have your dog destroyed. Anytime a dog bites a child it is deemed aggressive and is euthanized usually by the city. SAD LUCK
