Hill's Science Diet and Hill's L/d diet are NOT the same. The L/d is formulated to reduce the workload on the liver--low protein that is easily digested--I think it is egg and soybean based with only about 14-15% protein. You dog cannot handle a normal protein diet. You have to either get it from a vet or have a prescription from your vet--that's why it's called "prescription diet". Hill's has the market pretty well sewn up so that they can charge you what they want, and when you add in shipping costs, you're not going to get much of a price break by ordering online, although you can always try. If it's a real hardship, let your vet know, and see if there is anything else he/she could recommend. They realize that there are limitations on what people can and will spend on their animals. Maybe you could feed another dog food and cut it with brown rice or something. Good luck with you pup.

Hello
I understand your concern. I would recommend you to feed your dog strictly on HOME MADE FOOD. And beware that any home made food will just spoil your dog. You need to be cautious with what your dog eats.
You cannot just let eat your dog anything which we eat.
Right diet can keep your dog fit and fine and their coats shiny and smooth. Healthy dogs are the pride of their owners. Though, you may feed the dog most expensive of all dog foods, they may still be deficient in nourishment or get obese and may need weight control.
Many world-famous Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and published Dog Care Experts universally agree any dog that eats commercial dog food is at a much higher risk of dying prematurely and by the time symptoms are noticeable, it's often too late to prevent an agonizing death except by lethal injection.
You can find more information here.

L/D is a Prescription Diet food, which means that you can only get it at a vet's office (our dog is on G/D, which our vet has to special-order, and I asked about drop-shipping it to our house. The answer was no, it had to go to a clinic).
PetSmart carries some of the Prescription Diet line, but you will need to get the prescription from your Vet and present it to PetSmart. They will give you a Prescription Diet card so you can purchase it there. Call them first to see how much they charge and whether or not they carry/can order L/D.
Personally, I like getting it from my vet, becasue I know that the money is going to his clinic, not to a "mega clinic" or the like. But that's me. =)
Good luck with your dog!

You can buy Hills food online, which will probably be cheaper, but it's a prescription diet so you will need a prescription from your vet. Check out www.hillspet.com for where you can get it.
Chalice
EDIT: Science Diet is NOT the same - made by the same company but it's a general dog food - i/d, l/d and the like are prescription only foods.

Get her off that poison. Science Diet is one of the worst foods for dogs.
Please re-consider the food you are feeding your dog. I promise you will see results... and you will find it is much cheaper.
Please go read the books on this site...
www.rawmeatybones.com
A vet wrote about how commercial dog food was essentially killing our dogs.
Good luck, and trust me, if you read these, you will be amazed at the results you can get... especially in a sick dog.

ADD: Hills makes both prescription and regular diets. BOTH ARE crap in a bag. Dogs are CARNIVORES, this means they are meat eaters. Giving them potatoes, corn, wheat, soybeans, etc. is not giving them anything that is easy to digest. It is only causing their bodies more strain. Dogs lack the enzymes necessary to break down the cellular walls in plant material. This means they can't properly digest plant matter, which means their body has to WORK HARDER to try to get anything out of plant matter.
If you want to help your pet. Try switching to a Holistic Vet, who isn't more interested in getting your money by selling you crap food. That food starts a cycle you can't break- the dog gets worse... so you keep him on the prescription diet $$$, then he needs more vet care- you go back $$$... we now need to switch him to this other prescription diet $$$, etc. (and you can get that by looking at the ingredients- would you feed that to a carnivore?) All of it is money in the pocket of the vet you are going to now.
Anyone that tells you Hills is a good food, needs to do their research. Dogs are carnivores... Horses are herbivores. Would you feed a steak to a horse? No. So why do all you people insist on feeding grains/veggies to dogs? Dog food hasn't even been around that long- no more than 100 yrs. Small in the scheme of living... What do you think dogs ate before it was around? HUH? They sure survived just fine without that "balanced crap in a bag"! And had less diabetes, thyroid problems, cancer, etc. - all the same things humans are struggling with eating fast food crap. So keep feeding your dogs fast food in a bag for every meal, and don't wonder at your vet bills.

another posting is in fact correct. vets do not spend much time on nutrtion, and Hills is their source at vet school and they get spec deals, is why they sell it in their facilities.
If your vet is willing to OK an online Rx, please look at Wysong.net. They have a quality line of foods and supplements and Rx diets are available. they need your vet to fax the rx and his or her information ph # etc. Their foods ar not full of know allergens to MANY dogs (corn wheat & soy) or cheap fillers.
do some research, between over vaccination and junk dogfood, we are shaving yr's off a dogs life and causing health issues.

Many pet food stores will carry it, as long as you present a written prescription for it from your vet you can purchase it there.

Science Diet is the same food, made by the same company. You can buy it at any pet store and it is a lot chepaer. My dog was on prescription diet and I switched him to Science Diet. No problems. You don't even need to do it slowly. Check with your vet first to make sure it is OK to switch to Science Diet.
