I lived in Bensham, the biggest jewish community in the country. Why then have I read that this festival is solemn. On this day, the police patrolled, the jews roll about drunk and smoking they were in fancy dress, one was even in a kilt and ginger wig, they walked in front of traffic, hence the police for their protection. It sometimes went on until the early hours which wasn't really allowed. Have I mixed the name up then? I lived there for five years. I am sure I haven't

Thats not Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement and Jews fast from both food and drink, and spend the day in solemn prayer.

What you saw was the Holiday of Purim. It celebrates the time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from annhilation. By Esther.

The Jewish nation, in general, rejected Christ when He walked upon this earth, and nothing has changed. Yom Kippur use to be the day of atonement. The only day in the whole year, when the high priest would step foot in the Most Holy Place of the sanctuary to make an atonement for the children of Israel. The Most Holy Place is where God dwelt and if the high priest had any sin, he would instantly be killed. In the Most Holy Place was where the Ten Commandments was placed inside of the ark of the covenant. Most think that God does not abhor sin as He did in the days of ancient Israel, but has God truly changed? God declares, "I am the LORD, I change not" Mal 3:6. Many think that they can get into Heaven any which way, but this shows God's abhorrance of sin. We must break ourselves upon the Rock of Christ and examine whether we are in the faith or not.

OMG! You could not have gotten too more different holidays confused. LOL. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, Judaism's most holy day. Purim is the day we get drunk and dress up. There are good reasons why, but I won't go into it.

Yom Kippur is the day of attonement for past transgressions. It is NOT a day when you get drunk and have parades or play dress-up. I have NO idea what it you were seeing, but it wasn't Jews during Yom Kippur.

You are definitely not talking about Yom Kippur. On that day we fast from sundown to sundown and have a high Shabbat (Sabbath). As an observant Karaim Yahuda, I can assume you're talking about Purim (read the Book of Esther) in the Tanach. However, observant Jews do not get drunk on Purim. Our children dress up like Biblical characters from the Book of Esther and we hold a special (more fun) service for them to act out the story.
