There are many P2P (Peer-to-Peer) file sharing programs out there, the tiresome decision seems to be ongoing about which one has the best performance, virus-free capability, etc.
There are a few posted in the source I provided.. As per the last answer eMule (and it's derivatives) is fairly powerful, but can be difficult to configure in some cases if you're not very tech-savvy.
Personally I've switched and recommend a relatively popular open-source client lately called Ares Galaxy. It's very easy to use, portable, robust and very secure.
Verify it's popularity at www.sourceforge.net.
You seemed to have noticed Limewire's unpopularity. I concur. The Gnutella Network Limewire carries through is teeming with incorrect, distorted and infected files.

Try eMule Plus, it's free and doesn't come bundled with spyware like LimeWire and others do:
