I'm working on a web project which will propose product promotions, etc and I wonder if the word "Publicity" could be good for that?

I know that "Advertising" in English is often use for commercial things, but what about the word "Publicity"??

Think about it this way...

Advertising is something a company pays for such as a TV commerical or an ad in a magazine.

Publicity is something that is content in a TV show or the subject of an article in a magazine.

Example - Advertising - a 30 second commercial for Coca Cola showing cool kids drinking the beverage during Dateline NBC is a commercial.
Publicity - a 4 minute story on Dateline NBC about how Coca Cola did a nationwide serach to find the cutest kid in the world to drink a Coca Cola on their new commerical.

Finally, if you are promising somebody "publicity" it means that you are basically going to generate news stories for the product or service.

If you promise them advertising then you are going to create advertisments (TV, radio, print, outdoor, online, etc.)

Does that help you figure out the difference?

Perhaps.
'Advertising' is the way a business promotes a product/service to the community.

'Publicity' is the stir or reaction of the community. So, for example, the publicity concerning Paris Hiltons jail term has been enormous. Publicity also has more to do with the media and paparazzi than advertising.

The word publicity is definitely used for commercial things, but usually refers to a specific time frame, and publicity for a certain event.

publicity could be used, but it's means more to speak about something or see information about something, where advertising is paid for and created by the company to sell their product. it's a subtle difference. but i think in your case it would be applicable. good luck!
