Obviously, the others have answered that your Dr. is a good place to have this discussion, in case it's something big like autism, a speech problem, or a hearing issue.

But before you go, think about what else she's doing -- is she learning how to eat different foods? use utensils? Is she clapping along wwith songs? Is she more mobile in any way -- climbing? recently walking? Any major learning step in the toddler years can use up so much of her energy and brain power that she may regress in another area. When she masters the new task, the old skill may come back when she has the energy to devote to it. Another thing to check is if she pays attention to sounds -- either sudden noises or looks at you when you're talking or singing to her. If she's paying less attention than she used to, be sure the Dr. checks her ears for any sign of infection or wax build up. It could be that she isn't hearing as well so everything sounds like jibberish to her.

Good luck!

I had the same problem with my daughter, she started saying words at the usual pace, they were crystal clear, but would only say them when she really wanted to. Then, she just stopped! I had her hearing tested, which was all normal, then, a short time after her 2ND birthday she started to slowly form words, they are not as clear as I'd like but she is really trying now, and lots of praise helps. It takes a lot of persistence, try keep away from baby sign language at this age, if there are no hearing problems. Children can get a little lazy if their grunts and points get them what they want, just keep trying to teach them the word, after a while they will pick it up. 13 months, according to the experts is an OK age to have limited speech. Maybe a good place to start is with her hearing, your doc can refer you to be tested. And your doc can also rule out any other problems. Its probably a really simple solution, good luck!

Aside from something actually wrong with her- MAKE her say the words, If she points or grunts say to her 'what do you want?'. My friends kids always grunted and pointed and she'd pick up everything and say 'this?' and it bugged the hell out of me so I made the point to never respond to my kid like that.

And how many times do you give her what she wants when she just points and grunts? If you're giving in to her points and grunts there is no reason for her to use her words. She's got you over a barrel.

She is still pretty young. Sometimes they won't talk if they don't feel the need. If you respond to their other ways of communicating, they will continue to do it. If that isn't the case, I would agree with the first answerer. Loss of language can be a sign of Autism and you should talk to her doctor about it.

Ask her questions and wait for her responce. She won't respond at first but should catch on that in order to get something, she has to say something. You could also try baby sign language.
