This is not a joke. I know where the term Leathernecks came from and I understand the term "trooper". But what does the term "Jarhead" mean and how did the Marines get stuck with it? It does seem to be a term of endearment.

I have no idea. I think the term 'Jarhead' to decribe a Marine is an oxymoron. After all you can actually put something in a jar.

Now let me say that was a joke and meant for laughs! There are no more noble warriors on the planet than the ones in our USMC!

Jarhead comes from the haircut Marines wear. The close cropped "flat top" with no hair on the sides makes the Marine resemble a mason jar - i.e. "Jarhead."

Jarhead was a derogatory slang word against marines that many of them have picked up to describe themselves.

From the Old Ironsides.
Below decks with the low ceilings, candles were hung with jars covering them.
Most Marines were too tall for the low ceilings and when they were called to battle stations, they scurried so fast that most bumped their heads on the jars protecting the candles.

Thus: Jarheads!

Back in the day the lamps that lit the passage ways of navy ships looked like jars. Marines had to be a certain height to enlist. When they went out to sea on the Navy ships they were taller so they banged their head on the "jars". So the sailors called them "Jarheads".

It does NOT refer to their haircut.

Marine. Hair cut one reason. Other reason is they act like very little sense in the head under it. Pretty blue and red dress uniform aside, Army airborne all the way!!!
