If your already there, don't bother them by calling. If they check in, then ask. Otherwise try putting a movie in around 730, and have him ready for bed.

Well, the parent should have told you. But if they didn't, I would ask. Is this a kid you babysit regularly or is this a 1 time thing? The reason I ask is if it's a regular thing, they will most likely want you to try to keep their child on a schedule. If it's a 1 time gig, then they may want the child to be awake when they get home.
And this is from a parent. When in doubt, ask. If nothing else, it shows that you are serious about this job.

The parents should go over all these things with you before they leave. If not, just ask and make sure, most 5 year olds go to bed around 7 or 8 (at least the ones I know).

I have a 5 year old and she would normally be getting to bed around 10 on the weekends. I think you should maybe just ask if the parent wants you to put the child to bed anyway. It doesn't hurt to ask.

if your already there babysitting, its not a big deal..but yes, if you've not gotten there yet, and can still casually ask her, go for it, parents seem to like to know your involved etc..
Again, if you already there, just turn on the tube and give her a blanket around 9 ish, i'm sure she'll crash on her own, and either leave her there, or carry to bed.

Always ask your charges parents what the child's schedule is. Also, ask if there are any special needs the child has or any special rituals. Not only will it make your job easier it will earn you points as an excellent sitter.

I'm sure she will want you to put him to bed, most 5 yr olds have a well established bedtime and it will probably not be a problem.

it is always best to ask the parent they bed time rules and dinner time and get into details because it often sends a more resondable appears to the parents which will take a little stress of them to allow them to enjoy their night a little more

Absolutely. Check w/ her mom about all of this:
are they allowed an evening or bedtime snack?
what time you should begin the bedtime process (brushing teeth, getting pajamas on and such)
are there any bedtime rituals that help them sleep easier? (read story, nursery rhymes, etc.)
good luck, I hope it goes well
