It usually means they are dissatisfied about something. However, dependent on your relationship with your cat, it does not mean you are about to be attacked. My cat Gregory Eugene hisses when he is standing in the hall or any place and is told to move. He hisses when he's standing in the door deciding if he is going out or coming in, and is told to make up his mind. He hisses when he is startled by a touch. Again, Gregory has never attempted to attack. He is secure in my caring for him and I know he cares for me. When he hisses, I ignore that. I don't become afraid. That would affect our relationship. I do say in a firm voice, to stop that, to maintain the role of caretaker. Then he goes on his way or comes to me to be rubbed and rubbed and rubbed. So, I would say the best thing for you and your cat is to establish trust. Bond.

cats generally hiss when they feel threatend or if they are angry. If it's hissing when you play with it, you're probably getting it annoyed. If it's hissing over minor things it might just be a bit timid and get scared easily.
