First off...I'm reffering to a "on the job" situation..so no stupid or nonrelated answers please it just shows your ignorance
Ok I am a supervisor (Mexican) at a company where i manage a 25 man team the majority of which are white, that seem to obey orders only grudgingly and i have to watch them carefully cuz theyll always slack
i dont have this problem with either the one black dude or the two asian guys i have, the two asian guys are actually a godsent and match MY WORK ETHIC PERFECTLY
asians and hispanics get along
I dont know if maybe im just pushing them to far, i like to focus focus and work work untill the task is completed....there so complacent...
so my question is how do anglos percieve work, why is it so hard to realize work is work, So get to it!!! im NOT trying to boss them around i just want them to perform as hard as a MEXICAN OR ASIAN,
but theyre so attacthed to there ipods and frappucino breaks,? where is the American work ethic i heard about?

But then you see the white man on the phone, sitting down, etc. Its a personal experince that I have seen!!!

work ethics, I truely do not believe it is a race issue. A persons work ethic is taught to them by their folks and their formier employers, (ie their last job /jobs they were allowed to be slackers) I beleive it is how people are brought up and their life story. I firmly believe that when it is time to work and there is a time to play; no, if, ands or buts. I've seen the slackers in all races. My advice is to do this one thing, but you have to document it, and it has to be fair across the board. Give them some rules to follow and the penalty for breaking those rules. After the third strike You're FIRED! and then hire someone else and go from there until you have a team put together that meets your goals. But you do need to document it, that way, they can't say that you are harrassing them and that you are being racis. On the sheet with the rules when you pass it out have them sign for it, or get all their names on the same sheet that a way they can't say they didn't know. Know the law on workers right. Good luck

First off, you are playing race to try and stop race related issues. That will never work. Just make it clear that you're the boss and the employees are not. You are not there to be their friend.
I would say a lot of people have all of a sudden in the past 6 months or so discovered some deep seated issues but haven't said anything for the last 20 years. If anyone brings that up remind them that the vast majority of Latinos are here legally and that this one has the ability to can your ****.

I don't think race is the issue as much as how you supervise your people. Some people abuse their power when they get in those positions and get rather nit-picky about things that shouldn't be issues at all. I'd have jerks that would pull me out of a job just to point to a tiny piece of paper and have me pick it up....or take me to an isle and pick out one can that had more than a sheet of papers width in front of it for facing it and it wasn't even an isle I did. Just to let their over inflated ego get a boost proving they were the boss man.
Personally......I can't work when a boss is over me. It makes me nervous and I screw up more. I agree with the one poster who said you can't expect people to work like 3rd world workers. I don't go 100% all day. There's periods where it's 80% and then 110%. There's an ebb and flow and times where I need a few to clear my head....but at the end of the day I've accomplished as much or more than one who looks like they've been consistantly busy. Just tell me what you want and then leave me alone. Stand over me and be critical and my work is worse. I've worked with some people who always "look" busy but never get a thing done. There's also really gifted people who have a radar that goes off when the boss is comming and it looks like they are such hard workers yet they goof off more when the boss isn't looking. I never could master either one. I do what I do.
You keep saying as hard as Mexicans and asians work and I wonder if the quality is the same. Being fast doesn't necessarily mean better. I worked at a chicken farm and they had crews that would bring in the new chickens and put them in the cages. We had one crew that was all Mexican and another that wasn't. Yep....the Mexicans got the job done faster.....but there were tons more dead birds, injured birds and broken feed belts, cages and loose birds. The other crew was slower....but no dead and injured birds or equipment and only a few loose birds. I'd take the slow group any day. When all was said and done....they ended up doing the same amount of houses in a day, for the same pay....the Mexicans just went home earlier. Now I'm sure from your post you'd be beaming with pride at how FAST they were.....looked so much BUSIER than the other group. Problem is.....it wasn't BETTER in the long run.
You are going to run into a variety of people who work differently. Point is...do they get the job done at the end of the day. I worked with this black woman and I swear I never saw anyone work as slow as she did. But she got the job done...her records were perfect....her inventory was right on. But trust me....she didn't "look" busy at all. She probably would've drove you nuts. But she did her job and did it well and never broke a sweat. Maybe you should quit judging them for not doing things just like you and see what they are doing.

I can't say who's fault it is, since you did not provide all the details, ad of course your rendition of the story is bias. It could be racism, but it could be a cultural difference on your part. It could be something else. When I was supervising, My Indian boss and his wife had a problem understanding that their supervising Americans. The wife was especially bad, and frequently disregard American labor law as well as other regulations. The Husband was trying to actually comply with the rules and regulation of the industry. They expected that people here would work as if they were from a third world nation. Americans actually is the hardest working people of all developed nations and has been in the top three for decades. If you come to a country you have to respect their culture and part of its is their work attitude. I had similar problem with a filipino boss, but she was not that bad, although everyone but me in my job set had carpal tunnel, and I would probably have it if it wasn't the Indian boss above her, allowing me to take breaks to relieve the stress. My current boss is A Armenian eqyptian and a Chinese, and they both are laid back. They are annoyed at a couple of the Philipino workers for not being as productive as expected, but the others seem to do a decent job. THey have no complaints of the caucasian employee. As for when I was supervising, The one thai, one Indian and two Mexicans who work under me were lazy and the two Caucasians actually did their work with out being told. The two caucasians were professionals , oppose to the rest of my staff who are merely assistants to the rest of us.
Story goes, you might not have a large enough sample size to determine what Caucasians are like. Because all the caucasians in your work place are bad, does not mean all of them are like that. Second , do not expect Americans to work like people from a third world country. It's wrong to do so, because this is America, and you should respect the culture that you're in. If it's racially motivated, I have no defense for that, and I would not wish to defend them if that was so.

Yo u gotta be self-reliant and show dem little white boys waddup. If you are the boss then you probably deserved it, so show your pride. Giving orders and seeing that they are completed accordingly is simple. Do not focus or even bother noticing any gestures or other signs that the white boys are making that might offend you. Like I said it is very simple, they either finish the task in the time given to them or they are fired.

Why would it be hard to take order from a Mexican, Asian, black, white or what ever. I know blacks, whites, Asians, Mexicans, etc that are lazy, and I also know ones that are hard workers. From what you wrote it sound like you are micro managing d*ck.
"i have to watch them carefully cuz theyll always slack"
I does not matter what race your supervisor is or what race your workers are.
edit-
Damm man after reading some of your early questions I really think you are a racist and have it out for your "Anglo" workers. Here is the question you asked earlier.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AqACgzl5Bkqt7A8cq8OibJnsy6IX?qid=20070620125126AATef9T
I like the part were you say "unless your too scared to have your white superiority complex challanged, look it up, if you have the b@!!s". That really supports that you are not a racist and not harder on your white workers.

Look in the mirror and you will see the problem. It doesn't always have to be a racial issue. It seems that you are paying way too much attention to your employees' skin color and not paying enough attention to your duties as a supervisor.
Trust in yourself and believe in yourself. You are THEIR superior, their BOSS. You worked hard to get to where you are today (I assume). You are responsible for their behavior. Put your foot down if they are slacking off or fire them. Stop complaining to us in the cyberworld. We cannot change their behaviors for you. Take charge. Do your job.

As long as my boss is legal and quailified to do the job, I have no problem taking orders at work form anyone. I have had several bosses in the beauty business who were Mexican. They were good hairdressers and fair with everyone.

I really dont know, never had a mexican boss. But if he was a good boss and knew his stuff then why would I have a problem with it?
So many Mexican immigrants want to make a race issue out of everything but I honestly couldnt care less about what race someone is, its about the person and their attitude and behavior. thats what matters.
