There is indeed an injection for cats, called Program. It won't help in your case however as it only sterilizes fleas - it's a preventative measure, no use for if fleas are already present.
I would say you're not doing it quite right - Advantage does work, but you ALWAYS need to treat the environment when fleas are present, as they breed in the environment just as much as on your animal. You're going to need to get a spray from your vets, and treat your house at least twice, including all soft furnishing, the pets bed, even the car if he goes in it. You'll need to vaccuum the day after and repeat this treatment a few days later to get the remaining flea eggs that have hatched.
Flea treatment is complicated because it's hard to break the lifecycle. I personally recommend Frontline, it's my fave flea treatment. Whatever you're using, just be very careful that it all gets on the skin, not the fur, and do use it monthly.
Once you've got rid of this infestation (can take up to a month) you could move onto Frontline Plus - the best product there is for fleas because it treats the environment as well as the animal and only needs to be applied every 6 weeks!

Advantage has worked for all my cats(3) (and 1 dog), and one has extremely long fur. However, the vet gave me a pill to kick start the process from the inside out. One pill, one time. Also gave me a special home spray that worked wonders.
Before anyone thinks I'm an awful housekeeper, the whole area outside where we live has a bad problem with fleas. All the neighbors have the same problems, even after treating the grounds. Vet said that the bugs have become resistent to the commonly used products and it presents a real challenge.

yes, but there are many drawbacks to using it. Talk to your vet and ask if he'd use it on his animals. I found the clinic we use in a pinch will administer it but the vet I trust wouldn't use in on his pets, what does that tell you
Not every product works for every cat (or dog) try other products as well as the topical spray that keeps the fresh ones who will occasionally jump on your cat.
Finally, the fleas probably moved into your house as well, they are busy making more and more fleas and you cat meds probably won't be able to keep up. You will need to spray your carpets or even use bug bombs in your house. Check with your hardware store or wal mart for the products, the instructions are on the labels

Maybe try a different brand of the flea stuff (administered in the same way) drugstore.com always has the stuff on sale. If you think you're applying it incorrectly, you can take the cat to a vet for the application or a nearby animal shelter may help you for free.

My cat has very thick fur. I use Advantage but it only works if you get it right on the skin. If you just get it on the fur, it won't help. Have your vet apply it. Don't buy that stuff at grocery stores and pharmacies... it's a waste of money.

I've been using Frontline Plus on both of my cats (one indoor, one indoor/outdoor), and they're fine. You have to part the hair to the skin and put it on, and don't pet the cat for 24 hours - for this reason, you should put it on in the morning.
