why do some people put spoons in the top of bottles of wine after theyre opened?

They don't. It's just urban legend that the spoon is supposed to keep sparkling wine from getting flat. It doesn't work.

urban legend as mentioned by previous poster. Busted on the myth busters show. you are better off either recorking the bottle with the original cork and purchasing a stopper for both sparkling and non sparkling wine.

also, if you transfer to smaller bottle and then recork that's even better. oxygen is wine's enemy, so the less air you can in the bottle the better it will be.
