My Cat hates my husband whenever he comes in from work the cat starts scratching him. I tell the cat off but nothing works. I can't really afford training at the moment.
Any ideas???

Your cat is looking at your husband as the intruder in the house. Try squirting your cat with a small spray bottle of water ONLY when she (or he) attacks your husband. This won't hurt the cat, only wet him down a little. It will begin to associate attacking your husband with getting a spray bath. It will hate the water a LOT more than attacking your husband and it should stop. If the attacks get too bad, a new home for the kitty might be in order.

Tell him to start talking to the cat, monotone voice, obviously doesn't matter what words are coming out, but a repetitious, monotone voice, always. Cats generally have a "keep 'em where I can see 'em" policy on hands, no touching bellies or tails or paws. Teach hubby those rules. Having him take over all the feeding doesn't hurt either. And talking, talking, talking...I know it sounds weird, but this cat is assuming your hubby has no respect for him and thats probably why he's attacking. Cats can take a year or more to learn to change behavior, so if you both don't have patience it'll never work. Sounds like the cat may be unhappy altogether, is that possible? Not enough attention or something? There are some wonderful books to, try the library if money's tight. Good luck to the 3 of you!!!!!

You don't have to get rid of anybody- teach you husband how to interact with the cat. If he comes home and feeds the cat, the cat will probably realize that he's not a threat. I feed dry in the morning and wet at night. My husband and I share the feeding of wet food, so they know he's a feeder and provides good things. Have your husband play with the cat for 10 minutes a day- whatever game you know the cat likes. You don't need a cat trainer- I have a 12 year old cat that predates my husband. She is aware that he has treats and games. It may take time, but animals do learn to adjust. Don't let your husband treat kitty like a dog (men do this, I think). Good luck! These things take time.

Cats are very possessive animals and they can attack if they don't like someone. I myself found this out the hard way. My cat that I had hated my ex boyfriend and she attacked him. We had to have her put to sleep. It was really sad situation. I guess my advice to you is to and as much as this may sound mean to you, I sure am not being mean or joking when I say this to you.. But here goes.. Get rid of the cat or the husband one. That would be the only answer I have for you. Not unless you feel like your cat can like your husband and I doubt it due to the fact that your cat loves you so much and not your husband , that the cat is jealous and sounds possesive of you. Never let a animal ruin your life. Animals are suppose to bring happiness. While your cat has bought you happiness. It seems to have bought your husband some heartache. It's best to put your husband before the cat so I sure hope some of this advice helps you to make a good decision. Make sure if you do give your cat up then find it a good home. I would try this spot on the web. Does your town that you live in have a cite called Freecycle? You could place the cat up for adoption on there and also you can find other good deals as well on freecycle. Good Luck to you and your poor Husband, and God Bless You!

Can you post more background info. such as the cat's gender, age, neutered or spayed? Finally who was there first, the cat or the husband?

Is the cat attacking your husband in an aggressive manner, or is it a young cat who is trying to initiate play? Is it simply that you have a young cat whom your husband played mock fighting with as a kitten? This would make your cat view your husband as his playmate and young cats do have a lot of energy.

There is an excellent and inexpensive book called "Do Cats Need Shrinks" by animal behaviourist Dr. Peter Neville. It's compiled of his case histories and there is even one about a cat attacking a boyfriend (see chapter 8). I've posted a link to the topics this book covers and where you can purchase it.

Is your husband nice to the cat? maybe he has done something to piss your cat off, or make the cat jealous. Just have him pet and be nice to the cat or feed it treats.

My cat is not fond of my husband, the cat hides when he comes home, but its not hard to see why, because my husband tries to wrestle or chase the cat (or as he calls it "playing") and he treats my cat just like a dog.

You have a male cat, have your husband bite the cat back, i know it sounds mean, but it tells the cat who the alpha male in the house is, and that it's not him. this works, i just went through this phase with my wife's cat, and now it follows me around like a puppy. bite right on the nape of the neck, where the mother would have picked it up as a kitten, not on the ears or paws.
