Uhh.... you know that pretty much every society in history has done that, right?
Heck, the Americans tortured and murdered Native's and blacks for centuries for fun. So did the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Celts, the English, the Spanish, the Gauls... I can keep going.
Actually, the Romans were a very tolerant people in comparison to most. They usually simply adopted new gods as part of their Pantheon.
You might like to go read some history books.

Actually overall the Romans were quite tolerant of other beliefs. They only went after the ones that they felt were threating Roman rule. They were far more interested in politics than religion, but some religions try to mix the two.
