The tanks aren't made to withstand the new brand of ied that penetrates the armor before it explodes. A lot of tanks over there have the slat armor(kind of like a cage) around them that helps stop most of the standard ieds. There's a new type of tank(unfortunately I don't remember the name) that's being retrofitted with better defenses to help keep up with the ever-changing tactics over there. From what I understand 1300 or so are supposedly in the process. The majority of the larger casualities(like the 5 soldiers that died through this past week) are due to the ieds hitting trucks. Seems like it's kind of a hit and miss, literally, depending upon where the tanks take the ied.

Ive seen many tanks take IEDs and laugh. The main purpose of an IED is to destroy light wheeled vehicles and personnel. The main thing to worry about is DULLRAM. Depleted Uranium, Low Level RadioActive Material. That could cut M1 armor like butter.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said Friday the campaign was initially given clearance to land at Ramstein Air Base, but were told by the Pentagon Wednesday that the trip “would be viewed as a campaign stop.” “Senator Obama made the decision that we were not going to have wounded men and women become involved in a campaign event or what would be perceived as a campaign event.” -Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs

It depends on the IED. Some have been made to equal 2,000 lbs bombs. Those have taken out tanks. I think anything equal to a 500+ lbs bomb that is right next to a tank will destroy the tank.

I know your curious and probably even supportive of our troops in Iraq but to provide you with the information you have asked for would be a disservice to our men and women fighting over there.

So... lets just say away hasn't been found.

an Abrams can take a direct hit from anti-tank weapons like RPGs, anti-tank mines, and other tank shells. There still arent any weapons that i know of that can reliably punch through the Chobham armor that the Abrams' have

Depending on where the ied hits on the vehicle is whether everyone will survive or not. our equiptment is built to protect to a certain amount. but sometimes its not size of the tanks its the ied

I would say that IEDs just piss off Tanks, but in the right place it can blow the track off the tanks and stop that tank from moving, this can cause death of crew members if they are dismont and try to do repairs with out any type of protection. most tank by this time get towed out.

Im thinking that an IED wouldnt be able to take down a M1A1/A2, thats 60 tons of armor right there. IEDs are ment more for light armored vehicles.
