1. Politely ask them to quiet down. Explain what it sounds like in your place.
2. If the above fails after the third time, call the cops. Most towns are adopting noise abatement laws that consider disturbing the peace something at any hour.

In this day and age, it's best to be grown up. If you know the people offer to get to gether to talk about the problem. If there is no change, go to the authority.
If you are in an apartment go to the building go to the manager, I"m sure they have rules about noise.
If you are in a home, call the police about the noise.
First, always, try to take care of things in an adult manner.
I do understand the fear of retribution, but you have to decide which you fear more. NOisy neighborhood or the fear that someone will try to get back at you. Only the worst kind of person would get back at you for this, so as stated, if you know them, it's best to approach them as adults.

I am always still amazed about how selfish people are.
My neighbour occassionally has the stereo too loud. We just knock on the door and tell him and usually he is ok.
But we're lucky with him as I know some people can just get abusive.
LOL at the first answer, Thunderstruck is such a wicked tune although anything from acdc would do the trick.

I went to a local carboot sale and bought the biggest speakers i could find!, I bought a drum and base cd,
I faced the speakers against the wall, and when i went to work in the morning (7am, which was the time that they went to bed) i set it of full blast constant repeat, until i got home from work,( I had already prepared my other neigbours, they thought it was a great idea) They moved out 2 weeks later the council gave them a house because they were living in unreasonable cirmcustances, but i had bought mine and got no help atall, if you can't beat them join them (and see how they like it)

Lol, you are not alone in the world. Our neighbours make so much noise and sometimes we can't sleep coz it will be like they're welding, painting, scratching the walls and hitting metals, so I guess the best thing is to talk to your neighbours and if they dnt respect your wishes, then do something like covering up the noise with loud music and they will get to know how it feels when someone is making noise. Good Luck!!!

I confronted my neighbours face to face twice, politely explaining that the noise levels were unacceptable, the 1st time they were good and lowered the noise the 2nd time they were abusive so I phoned the police and informed the local council.
My friend however when she had problems put a hose pipe through her neighbours window and flooded his stereo after months of problems.x

If it's like 3 in the morning call the cops they will shut them down! There are noise bylaws in your Country I assume but if you have a party be prepared for revenge from them because they will probably do the same to you!

These days you don't need to deal with crazies - who knows how they'll react. Just find the number for the noise complaint/police and turn them in.
I haven't gotten the nerve up to do this yet myself, I just silently wish evil on them (what a coward, eh?)

When I had some downstairs from me in apartments I alternated between a broom handle on the floor to calls to the cops. I never confronted them face to face. Bad idea.

If you have done all the usual things such as talking to them if it's possible and asking them to be a bit more considerate, then contact your local council. They have people there to act and stop this unsocial behaviour
