I want to be a structural engineer and am doing my undergrad at Arizona State in civil engineering with an emphasis on structures. I hear grad school isnt that good for engineering careers so I was thinking about getting my masters in materials engineering to compliment the structural knowledge. do you think this is a good idea or should I get a masters in structural engineering?

The masters in structural engineering will do you much more good than a masters in material engineering.

Materials engineers usually go into the metallurgy or welding fields. Also many mechanical and chemical engineers take graduate courses in materials, because in their fields, there are so many materials options to design with. (plastics, elastomers, stainless steels, etc.)

In the structural field, the quantity and type of materials used are more limited and regulated with regard to applications and physical properties.

Yes but be sure and take some deep courses in computers as in the future every thing will be connected to a computer . If u do then you get some good programs and let the computer do the work for u.

It all depends on what you want to do. Masters does help though as many companies specifically seek masters engineering students.
