We just moved from an apartment to a townhome. We have 2 chihuahua's that used to go on pee pads in the apartment so when we got our sheltie he did what they did. We tried to take him out but didn't go outside just right when he got back inside. we got the chihuahua's to go outside now with putting pee pads outside. The sheltie however has not gone to the bathroom at all since 10 pm so now it's been almost 16 hours since he went last. The last time he went he went inside the house on a peepad and im sure he would if i gave in and let him go in the house. Is there something i can do to get him to go outside ive tried just about everything but i don't want him to hurt himself by not going.

have you tried putting a pad down outside? What about very near the door (on either side)?

At this point, I'd just get the dog to go before this evolves into a UTI or constipation.

put the pad outside for the shelti. he must think he will be punished if he goes any other place than on it. take him for a walk and praise him when he goes. if he doesn't go soon he might have a blockage but i think he might just be confused. good luck.eventually it has to come out.

you must encourage him to pee, either way, on a pee pad or whatever. I don't know how you will train him to do it wherever you want, but he must pee! 16 hours is way too much and he will destroy his kidneys and bladder and urethra otherwise. This is serious. If he doesn't pee soon, you must go to a vet.

Take him out again, and don't look at him or talk to him. Be calm and looking around relaxed and see if that helps. He will go eventually, but dogs can concentrate their urine better than people, so don't worry too much.

Walk him for about 30 min. He will eventually go... Walking stimulates their bowels, etc.

Good luck.

Don't give in... The dog is not stupid and will expect you to continue to give in.

Good luck.

Honestly, start checking your house, because it's unlikely the dog has held it for that long. He peed...you just didn't see it.

he probably isn't used to the surrounding yet. and you should take him to the vet to get him checked.
