What formats can a dvd player read usually??

I have some stuff in .avi what is easiest free way to get to play on a dvd player??? My dad said to do a data disk with the avi but it didn't work

All DVD players should be able to play DVD-video.
Now, most DVD players do play VCD and Audio CDs

There are many players that play Divx or xvid files (in .avi), but either they specify it explicitly, or are very low-end unknown brands...

There are a few that can even play wmv files...
