when you hear them walking across the hardwood or tile floors

They do not get too long, unless you do not let the cat "scratch" on something like a scratching post. "Scruathing" is what they do to keep back cuticle growth, and it keeps the claws sharp for hunting.

It's like a beavers teeth - they grow all the time, but if a beaver doesn't "chew" down trees, then his teeth will grow to keep his mouth open, and he will die.

A cat kept from scratching will get claws that are too long, asnd you need to (probably) have his claws pull by the vet. HORRIBLE thing to do to a cat!

A "normal" cat with access to the outside, and allowed to "scratch" in the house, has no problems... 9 years, and my cat has no problems, and I just let her be a cat...

When they start to interfer with walking or cut into the foot pads. You can snip them yourself or have a scratching post at hand....even as simple as a block of wood....so the cat can scratch it's claws and wear them down on his own. The scratching post will keep the cat from using your furniture as a nail file.

When they walk on the kitchen floor, you can here a little "click clack click clack". when they try to paw at something and they get stuck, such as the scratching post..if they get stuck their' too long. if the knead you (pushing gently with paws) and it hurts or you can feel their claws. Don't get them declawed..thats cruel, buy a cat nail clipper, and clip them whenever they get too long. this is what i had to do to my cat. her nails grow reallly fast.

Whenthey are too pinty at the edge, really really pointy and sharp, and they form a big curve. Basically, you need to trim them like every 3 weeks or so.
