I'd say "theory" in the sense that it's a model used to explain things, that additionally gives one a framework within which to work and get more answers. Can't say I supscribe to the notion myself, but apparently it works for some people.

There is no proof either way of the existence of God.

It's mythology. Right up there with the ancient myths of Hercules, Zeus, and even the modern myths of Big Foot and the Loch Ness Monster.
