ever see the movie "this is spinal tap" ?
the singer in the band is named "David St. Hubbins"and they ask him about his "unusual name".
1- "well he was an unusual saint"
2- "oh, there was actual Saint Hubbins?"
1-"yes, yes, he was the patron saint of 'quality footwear' ...."
as a kid i did a report on Saint Vitus. he was the patron saint of dogs, dancing, comedy, and not oversleeping. i'm not kidding, look it up! lol.
somehow, that appealed to me as a kid.

Why thank you for asking. Today is the feast day of Saints Thomas More and John Fisher. They were both executed by King Henry VIII of England. St. Thomas More was a politician and adviser to the King. St, Thomas More is the patron Saint of Lawyers and adoptive families, among others.
My wife and I were married in St. Thomas More parish in 2004. In 2006, we adopted our son. We are going to a feast day mass today at St. Thomas More church, after which there is an ice cream social.

As an atheist, I don't have a patron saint. However, I do have a saint in the family. For some reason this thrills me to no end. He's known as St. Kieran the Younger, and here are some links to him.

*Added--after reading Father K's answer as to why he chose his saint, I felt I had to share this with you. Not only is St. Kieran my earliest known ancestor, we share a birthday--February 24. So I suppose that, even though I am not a believer, St. Kieran will always be mine.

My "birth saint" is Elizabeth Ann Seton. Why? We'll have to find my mom and ask her about that. LOL
When I was confirmed, I took the Confirmation name Cecilia after St. Cecilia, patron saint of music. Her story is mostly legend (and not a pretty one, at that), but as a musician, I thought it was appropriate.
Funny thing is that I don't really pray to/with either of them.

No, the saints are the souls who are in Heaven with our Lord. The canonized "S"aints are patron/ess for various types of intercessional prayers to God. Such as if your a rape victim or suffering from a mental illness you can ask St. Dymphna to pray to God on your behalf. Or if your pregnant and want to have a healthily pregnancy or are a woman struggling with having an abortion you can ask St. Catherine of Siena to pray to God on your behalf. Or if your a solider in battle wanting to feel safe and not get killed in battle you can ask St. Michael the Archangel to pray to God on your behalf. There are patron/ess Saints for all sorts of careers, trades, jobs, etc. and there are even patron/ess Saints of countries such as Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness Saint of the Americas.

I was raised protestant but my grandma gave me an icon of St. Catherine of Alexandria (patron saint of female scholars) when I went off to college, so I always say she's mine.

When I was confirmed, I took St. Thomas Aquinas as my patron, because he was the author of the Summa Theologicae and is considered one of the most logically sturdy theologians of all times.
Maybe it wasn't the best choice considering that logic lead me to atheism...
