I have a huge problem with a dog urine smell. I had to go out of town for a 8 days and had someone to check in on my dogs like I always do and somehow she left the puppy to pee all over my upstairs carpet. The smell is atrocious, it makes me want to throw up. I have already goten the rug doctor carpet machine and done the carpet where she peed 3 times and it is still horriable. I have tried the Simple Soultion and I swear it just made it worse. We have family coming from all over the US in 2 weeks and not only can i not have them all be here when the smell is like that - I can't take it anymore. Please any suggestions would be appreciated

It is likely the padding under your carpet is ruined. Good news is the carpet will likely be OK as long as you remove the padding underneath. Padding is fairly cheap and larger retailers who install a lot of padding may even have odd remnants at discounted prices. Even if not you can likely get away with .99 cents a square foot. If it is only one room you should be able to pull the carpet up and replace the padding then lay and stretch the carpet back out yourself. If it is anything over 200 square feet you may want to consult with a professional.

Before you start, if you are having problems locating where your dog has urinated, use a black light. The offending area will show up using this method. Many products are on the market to remove urine odors but all are not equal. Urine odours can also be removed with common household items and some old-fashioned cleansing.

White vinegar is a time tried and proven ingredient that aids in removing both urine stains and the odour. The simplest method is to locate urine stains, which can be done with the use of a black fluorescent light. Stains appear on furniture, walls, or carpet as a yellow splatter or spot. Combine one part distilled white vinegar to two parts warm water to create a spray. Remove as much urine/spray as you can using a paper towels. Mist vinegar spray over areas of urine and rub with a paper towel. An alternative method is to mix the solution in a bucket and dip a clean cloth into the liquid. Rub the stain with the vinegar solution. After the vinegar dries, wipe away both solution and stain with warm water.

Another simple to make spray uses 15 ounces of hydrogen peroxide, two tablespoons of baking soda, and two squirts of liquid hand soap. Mix in a plastic container with a plastic spoon. Discard after use. Apply this solution to urine stains or odour areas, and then rinse away with warm water.

Baking soda really helps. Sprinkle it on your carpet pretty heavily and leave it there all day if you can, then go back over it with a vacuum and re-sprinkle it lightly. As you walk over it, it will work its way into the carpet and eliminate the smell. Repeat as necessary. You can also get the Arm and Hammer Scented Baking Soda for carpets made for pet smells but I would use the regular stuff first. Good luck!

the problem is that the urine has gotten down to the pad and theres no way to clean that

the carpet is going to have to be removed because now with all the diffrent cleanings has pushed the liquid down to the wood

so unfortunately you are going to have to pull the carpet up

if you have finished hardwood floor under the carpet its not too bad , but if its unfinished you'll have to get some big throw rugs for now and then have the floor recarptted when you can afford it ...unless money isnt a problem then have it pulled up and recarpetted right away

Try having someone from Chem Dry come and do a pet urine treatment. It usually works great. Gets stains, smell, etc. That is if you are talking about a carpet like the wall to wall... If you mean an area rug, you might try using Nature's Miracle, or having Chem Dry come and clean it too.

Good luck.

Try using an enzymatic solution from the pet store or vet's office - Nature's Miracle is one brand - but there are others.

If that doesn't work you really have no choice but to replace the carpet - and pad - and make sure to disinfect (or replace) the underlayment of your floor.

Check with your insurance agent and see if you might not be covered - It's a long shot -but worth asking.

If you don't have the money to "replace" all of the carpet, consider cutting a section from your closet, and trading it out with damaged carpet. When you cut the stained carpet up, clean it thoroughly and then dry it before putting it in your closet.

Try soaking the area in water and DAWN detergent. Dawn cuts grease, and it will help cut that smell out too... Soak up water with a clean towel, then dry w/ a blow dryer. Consider buying arm and hammer carpet cleaner and putting it on the area after soaking w/ water.

When I have a pet stain on my carpet I use pine-sol in a spray bottle. It helps to mask odor & get stains out pretty well. If your problem is on a wider scale (sounds like it) you can dillute the pine-sol with water and use that in a commercial carpet shampooer (you can rent them from grocery stores, like Walmart) instead of using a regular carpet shampoo solution in it.

AirX 60 works like a charm and I have used it on bedding and carpets. AirX also makes something that has enzymes in it that destroy urine. You can find it at a janitor supply place.
