What's the rationale behind using any song to walk up the aisle to, other than the traditional wedding march?

Is it just to make it more unique? Or because the traditional wedding march has some unfortunate connotation that I don't get?

Just curious what's behind this...Your opinions are appreciated!

Actually, I don't care...I've been married for almost 15 years, so it don't make no nevermind to me! I'm just curious about what causes others to pick something different.

And for the record, not allowing music in the church is totally different than picking another song to walk to.

Okay, just a little more detail...The wedding march doesn't have to be played on an organ! In fact, I'm pretty sure Wagner didn't write it for an organ, but actually for a full orchestra.

Also, I actually prefer Mendelssohn's wedding march, even though it is traditionally the recessional...my husband & I used this for both the processional and the recessional.

We decided, even before we got engaged, that when the time came, we wanted to have a fun wedding. Part of the fun is doing the unexpected. So, while we will have a classy wedding, it will be different and fun. Part of that is choosing a processional and recessional that are not traditional. We're also having cupcakes instead of a wedding cake, and an upscale barbeque menu instead of the usual beef or chicken. We want our wedding to be memorable to our guests and a unique reflection of us, so we're taking every opportunity to personalize it, but without being too out there. That's why we're not having the traditional wedding march.

As from your last added detail - that's all I ever think about when I hear "here comes the bride", is the stupid version.... so that's all that would have been in my head if I heard it at our wedding!
We got married in a Ukrainian Catholic church, and our ceremony was all in the Ukrainian language. For our processional, which was for both the attendants walking in as couples, then my husband and I walked down the aisle together, we used a very old and traditional hymn to Mary, which a friend of mine played on the bandura (a Ukrainian stringed instrument). So that was why we used something different, because it was special to our religion and cultural heritage. For the recessional, we used a perky and beautiful Ukrainian folksong!

Dude, knowing that the traditional wedding march has the bride die at the end makes it that much cooler. ^_^

Ahem, for me it just doesn't fit as something I would want to play. I think a lot of people feel the same way, but if you like the old standbys more power to you. Other songs, (one operetic piece in particular) hold more meaning to me than that particular song.

It reminds me of childhood, but all the good parts made alive on each musical note. I think the sentiment is nice for the event, considering this is suppose to be one of the great passages in one's adult life. Ah, the young past and a blossoming future. That would be why I would want to play a different song.

It will be a beautiful day anyway, irregardless of what is played at anyone's wedding.

I just hate Wagner's wedding march. I'm not a fan in general, and that tune drives me up a tree. On top of that, my father had a particular loathing of all of Wagner's music. Also, I was having a bagpiper preceed me up the aisle and I dislike the tune even more on a bagpipe. I just plain didn't want it at my wedding. I wanted to enjoy the music.

So I had the piper pick a good tune. He chose a traditional Scottish tune called Highland Wedding. It was perfect for me.

Others pick a particular tune because it has meaning to them or because it's something they haven't heard too many times in the past, or simply because they want their wedding to stand out in other peoples' minds and think this is a way of doing it.

Wagner's wedding march isn't even that longstanding a tradition, since it wasn't written until late in the 19th century.

If you like it, then that's great. If you don't, then you're not obligated to use it.

I don't know about everyone else, but I *really* don't like the wedding march!! I always think of that joke kids sing: "here comes the bride, all fat and wide" and it just seems cheesy to me! So that's why I won't use it. Nothing to do with being unique or anything, but I'll probably use either Enya or Vivaldi when I get married. I just think they both have some beautiful music and to me it's much nicer than the wedding march.

As a wedding planner, that song is actually my least favorite ever! I am also a non traditionalist so I like using beautiful music that is unexpected and that no one has heard before. In the end it is just a personal preference. Most people either have dreamed of walking down the aisle to that song or they know of another one that they like better.

The wedding march is actually considered a secular song by some churches and they do not allow it to be played in their church.

I'm getting married out doors & I want the sound of an acoustic guitar playing while I walk down the "isle". I don't know if the wedding march would sound very nice played that way :) That's the only reason why I'm not using it.

I'm not sure why not? I don't think there has to be a rationale besides "this is how we want it". It's not because the wedding march is bad; but it's not THE only thing available, and people like to pick and choose what suits them. Just because I'm gonna go eat Italian tonight doesn't mean I don't appreciate Mexican; but this is just what I feel like - lasagna. And tomorrow I might have tacos, who knows!

Its the unique thing....the bridal industry has brainwashed brides that if their wedding is not "UNIQUE" then it will suck and everybody will say how lazy you were planning and hate it.

The reality is that there are only a few unique ideas out there. Everything else has been done so do what you like and don't worry about if its unique or not. Lets think about it ladies..how long have weddings been happening?

As far as the wedding march...hell with everyone trying so hard to be diff. actually sticking with a tradition and using the wedding march would be pretty freaking unique.
