We can't build a Church on man. It was on Peters confession that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the livig God, not on Peter himself. Jesus told Peter that the gates of hell would not prevail upon this church.I have a news flash: The gates of hell did prevail on Peter the night they crucified the Lord, as a matter of fact. They did it Three times before the cock crowed.

Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, the rock, to signify (show by sign) that the revelation he had received was the rock upon which Jesus would build his church. No one comes to Jesus without receiving the revelation that Simon Barjona received.
edit:
Before he was named "Peter."

Hi Don,
The Church built upon the Messiah, Jesus Christ is the ONLY TRUE CHURCH here on earth. Hexley is definitely wrong. Paul was an Apostle of Christ, NOT a Church foundation.
Joe and Monica are partially correct. SouthernMale is absolutely correct also. The Solid Rock (Concrete) is Jesus Christ. HE is our Foundation and the True Builder of HIS Church. Have a wonderful weekend and a glorious LORD's DAY.
Thank you,
Eds
EDIT:
I vote for Manoman. He has the WORD and has backed up his answer properly with scriptural references. Great answer Manoman!
Thanks,
Eds

There is only One Church... All who come to God in The Way He prescribes receive His free gift of Salvation. Those become part of The Body of The Church of which Jesus The Christ is The Head. Those are the ones of The True Christian Faith. Only those of The Church will enter Heaven

Apparently the ones that "claimed" to build themselves on Jesus have not done very well. Jesus Himself built the church on Cephas (Rock) / Peter and allowed him to appoint deacons and holy men to carry on His church. And that church is still the most visible recognized institution of Christ in the world, not a house church with a house pastor. The gates of hell would attack that church from within as well as without but it will not prevail.

Well, let's see... Jesus said that Peter was "the rock" on which he would build his church. With Jesus as architect, that's bound to be a good house church.
So I guess it would depend who built the church on Jesus. Cuz I think so people were using straw and not bricks.

the church that worships the tri-une God was built on Peter... as Jesus said. Paul is referring to people who were not building their lives on Christ, but instead were building it on wealth, security, success or fame.
