I have just purhcased a new 64 bit computer. What do you think will be the best operating system for me. The vista Ultimate 64 OR XP Pro 64.

The system is a intel core 2 Quad, with 4GB RAM, 512 graphics card, 500GB Hard Disk, with as ASUS Premium Motherboard.

I am looking for the best performance.

Thanks

Best performance for what -- gaming, extreme graphics?

There are several key factors to supporting the Windows Vista experience level. One key factor is the memory configuration for the system, specifically the amount of physical memory installed and whether it is dual channel DDR2 versus single channel DDR2. Using single channel DDR2 versus dual channel DDR2 is expected to provide different experiences with Vista advanced graphics. Additionally, the display modes and configurations are also expected to have an impact on the user interface support.

For Intel graphics platforms, both the Intel 945 and the 965 Express chipset families will support the Windows Aero desktop interface. For amount of system memory, 1GB DDR2 dual-channel system memory or greater should be used with the system configuration. For the memory speed, DDR2-533MHz will support the Windows Aero interface, but higher memory speeds such as DDR2-667MHz are recommended.

Strictly performance I'd stick with XP at the present time, realizing VISTA will become a must down the road.

Hard to tell without benchmarking your application on both. The street says that, in general, Vista is slower that XP with many applications. It's certainly seems that Vista is slower at 512mb than XP for everything -- does that follow up to 4g?. At 4g of memory / 512 video, Vista might shine. It were me, I would go XP Pro and wait until the word on Vista is totally stable.

u do not need a 64 bit operating system. there are not a lot of drivers. what is ur graphics card. u do not need 4 gb or memory unless u do high end video editing or encoding. that system is overkill.

I would suggest sticking with a 32 bit OS for now because not many thing's (drivers and such) are available for 64Bit OS's 32Bit should do good with your 64Bit CPU.
32Bit will work great.
